I don't know if it matters to anyone or not, but July 9 is the same day as the Gold Star Dive in Avalon. Last year, there were roughly half a bazillion divers there that day. I have already made reservations on the Catalina Express, and I would imagine the boats will fill up pretty quick.

Just an FYI...looking forward to seeing everyone.

It wasnt too bad last year, the Gold Star dives ended early and then everyone cleared out... plus there was lunch to buy right at the Point! I remember being amazed at how many divers were there but how uncrowded it was underwater... there was a line at the steps sometimes, however I also remember coming up from one dive and having a helpful volunteer assist me with removing my fins (they were keeping things running smoothly for the Gold Star divers). If I remember, PhotoTJ won something (he always wins something!)

What is the Gold Star Dive?

Jim, this should help (this info is from a previous year)

The Second Annual Gold Star Dive, an event to be held on beautiful Santa Catalina Island at the famous Casino Dive Park, will be held on July 17. This event is sponsored by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Athletic Association, Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, several dive shops and companies associated with diving. This event will be a fund-raiser for the Avalon Sheriff's Station's S.T.A.R. (Success Through Awareness & Resistance) program and the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber. The STAR program is a successful program that assists in the education of school-age children on the dangers of substance abuse and narcotics. Funds raised by the Gold Star Dive will be used solely for the education of children on Santa Catalina Island. Scuba divers and skin divers will search for the Gold Stars in depths between 10 feet and 50 feet. The Gold Stars will measure approximately five inches by five inches, be vacuum-packed, numbered, and made of solid chocolate. The Gold Stars will be placed among the rock formations in the Casino Dive Park. Divers will have an hour and a half to search for the Gold Stars. Participants who find a Gold Star will return the number to check-in table for a prize. Those numbers not found will be raffled off, along with non-diver prizes.

Participants and donors will pay a fee of $25. The first 150 persons will each receive a free commemorative T-shirt the day of the event at Wrigley Plaza, in downtown Avalon. All scuba divers must be certified and attend a pre-dive briefing at Casino Point prior to the event. T-shirts, hot dogs, and sodas will be available for sale. For further information, call (310) 510-0174, or e-mail klclevel@lasd.org.

It's fun...the kids had a good time last year. The stars are easy to find, and it's a great fundraiser. Best thing for me was the youngest daughter winning a pair of Volo Powers in the drawing...too big for her, but fit me perfectly. :eyebrow:

The annual Gold Star Dive rarely interferes with my diving since I don't dragf my lazy ***** down to the park very early... prefer drinking my coffee and reading my e-mail and SB before I go down. Don't let it scare you away.

Looking forward to having a Wrinkles Dive in my home park again. Enjoy seeing everyone! Is anyone staying over that night. Maybe I could do a showing of a DVD or two at the house, or possibly Antonio's that night.

A DrB DVD at Antonios?? Nice. A little vid, a few peanuts, a white pizza (or maybe the only veggie pizza in the world that comes with CARROTS!!!??!?!) I gotta check the sched... I hope this works.

I remember going last year - it was no biggie, really. Lunching at the park was fun.

Looking forward to hanging out in your home park and visting with you as well!

I prefer staying over the night before and the night after, but let's see what happens closer to then with my schedule. I think my time commitments over the next few months might get a little out of control. Also, those summer rates get a bit out of control over there. :11:
