For some reason, I had wayyyy too much cash in my wallet when I got to Avalon this morning, and with few divers (who I trust) but lotsa lookie-loos (who I don't) out on the point, I had the brilliant idea of buying a small dry box for my cash and credit cards. Put it in my BC pocket along with my light, and went diving. At the glass bottom boat, I pulled out the light, being careful to make sure the box stayed put...it was gone! Looked all over, couldn't find it.
So, with a total of five dollars to my name, a hungry wife and kids, no money to get my car out of the parking garage, no way to pay for the four tanks we had rented, and six hours to kill before we could go home, life was suckin pretty hard. My unbelievably resourceful and way understanding wife grabbed the phone, found out Vons has a Western Union office in it, called her mom, and within an hour we had a couple of hundred bucks to survive on. Catalina Divers was awesome when I told them what had happened, and gave me our c-cards back and just asked me to call them when I got home with a credit card number (paid them before we left for home).
So...if anyone happens to find a small, clear dry box with a few hundred dollars and a buncha credit cards in it, I'd sure appreciate it if you let me know.

Stranger things have happened. I will keep my fingers crosses.

Bummer way to end the day.

Thanks for the condolences. Apparently, someone found it and was nice enough to call and report my cards missing this morning. Still waiting for them to turn it in to the harbor master or sheriff.

Glad to hear there was a happy ending. I had heard about it through CDS and had planned to keep an eye out for it when I dive this week. Glad it was recovered.

A small dry-box ~ positively buoyant ~ in a BC pocket probably isn't the way to go unless you have it clipped off somehow so it can't make a break for the surface.

Glad it was found. Hopefully you will get it back.

Maybe it was a couple of hundred bucks in quarters :)

If he lost that box o' quarters, he probably would have rocketed to the surface, and would be dealing with DSC issues right now and not calling his credit card companies.

Unless, of course, he was horribly over weighted from his rental gear. In which case, he may have found himself perfectly weighted after the box o' quarters jetisened from his pocket and bounced off the port side of the Sue Jac. This is likely why he had no idea the quarters had "made a break for the surface" and only found the flashlight when reaching in his pocket.

Either way - brick o' quarters as ditchable balast or as anchor to doom, I'm glad the box has been recovered.

Next time, use cave line to keep that block o' cash fastened to the bolt snap and not some wacky Costco Rainbow Zip Tie nonesense.

Update...

Got a call today...someone found my stuff! He returned every last dime, minus the $100 reward I gave him. Makes you feel good that people like him still exist. I only hope I can pass on the good karma myself some day.
