Help Travis Dive Festival

We are pleased to announce that local dive club, DiveVets is kicking the all-out dive party into gear at Malaga Cove for the first ever Help Travis Dive Festival on Saturday, June 25th. Very similar to our last DiveVets event there (the Easter Egg hunt) -- where we had over 50 divers participate - this fun-packed and family-friendly day is guaranteed to turn out the local dive crowd and friends, only this time we’ll have more things to do and an even better reason for doing them.

As you probably know by now, the local diving community is very committed to helping fund medical expenses for a special person who suffered a tragic swimming pool accident a few years ago. That young man is Travis Robinson, the son of Jocko Robinson, a longtime fixture of the South Bay dive community. You can read more about Travis' struggle with his spinal injury, and also cause for great hope, at WWW.HELPTRAVIS.ORG. You've seen the blue Help Travis - Inspire Hope bracelets on all the frequent divers around the South Bay and the islands, and maybe you've heard that a DiveVets fundraising drive is underway with POKER TOURNEYS, BOWLING NIGHTS, and the much anticipated Dive-Ettes SAILOR 'n' SIRENS BOAT AUCTION.

The Dive Festival is a major link in the chain of help for Travis, and definitely one of the most fun! We will start the dive day Saturday with an UNDERWATER TREASURE HUNT organized by local favorites, DM Tony Toniolo, Instructor Dominic Carrozza and DiveVets regular Rick Sharp, with prizes to the winners. In this crowd, things can get competitive; think Chocolate Lobster Dive with an attitude. For the truly bold of spirit, the guys are also hosting an UNDERWATER POKER TOURNAMENT - you search & recover the best hand, you win the prize - but you've gotta know when to hold 'em, and know when to.. well, you know.

After the dives, one and all are invited to a tasty BBQ right at Malaga Cove, so bring the kids, and bring 'em hungry. Food and non-alcoholoic beverages are being donated by local establishments to be sold to you at bargin prices, with all proceeds to go to Travis.

Between cheering you on in the dive contests and grilling you up some tasty hot dogs and burgers, we are holding ongoing games and events for the topside crowd. For the crowd who's not immersed at the moment, we have bocci ball, naturalist talks, and scubaopoly (think: drop off the kiddies) and for the hardcore divers, we're featuring DM Joe Raemer's DIVE GEAR SWAP. Items such as underwater cameras, masks, fins, spare air and other good stuff can be purchased at drastic savings, and you guessed it --100% of the proceeds go to the Help Travis fund. Divers: please keep donating, new, used and seldom used pieces of dive gear, to be sold at this event. SEA D' SEA in Redondo Beach is acting as a drop off point for donated gear. Joe will take pictures of the donated items for all to view in advance. By the way, get there early for the gear swap, as most of these items! will go fast.

Additionally, several local dive instructors have volunteered their time to teach certain Specialty Courses, in exchange for donations from their students. All proceeds for these classes will go to the Help Travis fund. To make prices a little easier on students, supplies for the classes can be purchased at a discount, or borrowed from local divers. Chances are you know someone with the textbooks, but we can help you if you don't. Call 310-376-9922 for details of specialty classes being offered, or check out the www.helptravis.org website.

So, join us at Malaga Cove for some donuts, juice or coffee, and stay for a day of diving competition and fun. Bring the family, eat some BBQ, and enjoy a great day in the sun, knowing you and your family will have helped out a worthy cause. Invite all your friends as this event is open to all.

If you have any questions, post them on the DIVEVETS WEBSITE
