A couple questions concerning nitrogen absorption.

Has anyone seen any studies that compare the rate of nitrogen uptake on males verses females?

Has anyone seen any studies that compare the rate of nitrogen uptake as compared to body fat. In other words how does weight gain/loss impact this?

Looking for information on the impact that these two factors have on DCS.

Thanks

Dear Mike:

I believe what you ultimately desire to know is the risk of DCS and does it differ from men and women. When the incidence of DCS is very low, as it is in recreational diving, this is not an easy question. One must factor out all other variables such as depth, bottom time, type of dive (repet?), and so forth.

It is true that percentage of body fat differs between men and women, but this fat does not appear to play a direct role in DCS. Fat in women is generally distributed uniformly beneath the skin. The fat depots occur in the abdomen in men. Neither of these anatomical locations is “bonds prone.” The problem seems to be one that is considerably more localized.
