Am I the only one finding it out of place (weird, akward) the association of diving entities like DAN and NAUI and a NASCAR race team? I'm referring to the ad on this site about the Team Scuba NASCAR racing team.
I mean, scuba diving is a lot about conservation of species and environment.

Plus, how are they going to keep their regs in their mouth with no teeth.
You'd be surprised at the number of NASCAR fans that might be interested in diving. I know that I was surprised by many of my fellow divers I have run into doing more local diving around the Midwest. A lot of them definitely are not the yuppie or environmental type.
For the record, I don't like NASCAR. Hey, let's drive in a circle for a couple of hours, it'll be fun.
I think you should read the forum that we have devoted to Team Scuba, and you can ask them directly.
I'll tell you in a nutshell, that the idea is to expose scuba diving to a huge audience. Team Scuba's owner is a diver. Team Scuba's driver is a diver. Auto Racing, while not my cup of tea, is the largest spectator sport in the united states. The exposure for scuba diving in general will be immense. It seems like a great idea, I wish the team good luck.

You mean diving is about conservation like all those diver flying all over the world to get on those big diveboats that burn about a barrel of fuel to the mile and leave half of it on the water or the destruction of shorline habitat to build resorts who's run-off kills reefs...not to mention the effects of diving pressure. I see what you mean. It's all so much cleaner than auto racing. LOL

And the airplanes we take to get to our dive destinations, and the boats we dive from don't pollute? Have you ever heard a diver complain that the dive boat was too fast, and arrived at the dive site too fast?
Seriously, it is about trying to tap a new population of potential divers. They are targeting a group that willingly spends $500-$1000 to attend a race for a weekend. Folks with that much available disposable income make nice targets.

Yes, for a long time diving was marketed on easy and safe to get the couch potatoes interested. Apparently the industry decided that it was becomming too much of an "ald fogies" pass time and they were missing some of the younger more adventurous types so there has been some shift to market as more of an "adventure sport".

Nascar just seems like it has nothing to do with diving. I could almost see getting involved with the racing hydroplanes, like Miss Budweiser, at least they're boats. Stock cars just don't have any connection. A dive business sticker on a NASCAR vehicle isn't about diving.

Nascar doesn't have anything to do with diving but the advertisers must think that Nascar fans are people they can sell diving to. The Olympic games don't have anything to do with toilet bowl cleaner (or whatever) either but lots of companies that make all sorts of products buy advertising there anyway.
I've noticed that I don't see much of a correlation between those who watch and those that do. A spectator of footbal doesn't seem more likely to actually take part in sports like football. Personally, if I wanted to advertise diving, I'd advertise where there were doers rather than watchers. I might advertise diving at a ski resort or something like that. Those people have money too and they do more than sit and watch.
Things like beer and snack foods seem to be the thing to try to sell to spectators.
