    Heron Island AUS trip report

Hi all, me and the Mrs. took a trip to Heron Island Australia (and Fiji) in May of this year...

We flew into the smallish town of Gladstone, and needed to stay the night at a local hotel. Kind of an industrial town. We got there around 3pm and after the seemingly non-stop (Boston->LA->Sydney->Brisbane->Gladstone) flight it didn't really matter as I felt like a just arrived on Mars... went straight to bed. Got up the next day refreshed and took the 5 minute shuttle journey to the dock. Loaded up the gear and waited a while until everyone was ticketed and ready to board... the boat:

It took about 2 hours to make the transit. The ferry bobbed and rolled, nothing major... some people had a bit of hard time with it. You're out in the open for a while, but the day was relatively calm.

This is what you see when you arrive.. looking back to where you came from at the wreck, at this time the tide was going out and was rushing over that wall....

Arrive at the room.. sort of a two room split, nice and tidy...The bed, common room, deck, and outside view:

The on-island dive operator was excellent, professional and accommodating. All of the dives were within a 10 minute boat ride of the resort. At the time of our trip there was a large conference that consumed 80% of the rooms on the island, so most of the boat trips were 2-3 divers at most. Only the last day had more than 3 divers.

The dives... I think we did a total of 6 or 7 dives the 5 or so days we were there. visibility varied alot for most of the dives. The pics were taken with an old Canon S80 with underwater case, so they aren't the greatest..
