A buddy & I are going on the Explorer Ventures live aboard in May. We are arriving the day before to make sure our luggage makes it with us & would like to try to get in a dive or two before heading out on the boat. I've been looking around the internet & really can't find much, if any real information on any dive shops/ operations. I was only able to find 1 e-mail address & I sent off for some information a couple of weeks ago & have heard nothing back. Are there any shops or operators in or near George Town? It doesn't really even need to be a boat charter, we would even be tickled to just find some place to rent some tanks & weights & do some shore diving. Any Informtion available?

You might be out of luck. The Bahamas Diving Assoc. only lists Exuma Scuba and clicking on their website link indicates they're no longer in business (or at least no longer hosting their website...)
Exuma Scuba is currently the only dive operation in George Town, Exuma and has been in business since March 2000.

Not sure what's going on with these guys either, their website is mostly blank:

If you find anything out, please post here, I may be on a similar trip this summer. Or we may go to Andros...

Hi,

My husband and I are also booked on the Explorer I in May. We are going a day early also and will be staying in George Town. What week will you be aboard? Where are you staying? We are thinking of getting a room at the Peace and Plenty in town site. Since you will be not going to the boat directly from the airport, what have you worked out with the Explorer to get to the Boat?

Laine

We will be going on the May 12-19th trip. Perhaps we'll be going together. We will fly in on the afternoon of the 11th & are staying at the Peace & Plenty resort. As for transportation, we will probably do a Taxi from the airport to the resort; from the resort to the boat. After the trip, we are flying out very early Sat. May 19th & are Just going to take a Taxi from the boat to the airport.

I was able to find another e-mail address from PADI's web site. I guess it depends on how often PADI updates it's dive center directory. I decided to try that address. We'll see what happens.

Got an e-mail back from the dive op the otehr day. Didn't get much info in the way of a schedule, but did get the rates of $125 for a 2 tank dive. You can e-mail Amie Aspden at diveexuma@hotmail.com

Wondering if you found any other Ops there? A group of us are going Dec 28, wanted to dive the cavern, but the one dive shop we could find said it wouldn't work that day - and it was $150 for a 2 tank trip. Probly just wait to dive from the yacht - they mind if you call it that? :p

No, when we were there in May, Dive Exuma was all there was & once on the island we were never able to contact anyone at the shop. We even walked to the shop (about a 3 mi. hike) & the shop was closed that day. We tried calling multiple time with no success. Not to say something else hasn't opened up since, but my buddy & I had no luck what so ever.

Okay, thanks - we'd already planned on enjoying the island, looks like we'll stick with that. Appreciate the response...

You all might want to check with someone at Explorer and see if they know of any trips for ya. I am scheduled to go in January but I am going to arrive on Saturday and keep my fingers crossed that my gear makes it. I am flying directly from Atlanta on Delta and will assume my luggage will be on the plane. Will carry on my reg, computer and mask just in case.
