hi thank you for reading this. i took the open water dive course from padi in puerto vallarta, and completed the first half, book work, classroom, pool dive, and dive one and two with skills completed for padi scuba diver. on dive 3 i was fine at 30ft but when we droped off to about 38ft i experienced a entense pain in my left eye, felt like it was going to explode. tried to equailize, then went up several feet and tried to equalize again, also tried blowing air into mask thinking it might have been mask squeze
this all happened about 15 minutes into the dive, had to discontinue the dive and was not able to complete dive 3 or 4 for my open water certification.. after an hour out of the water the pain felt like a headach in my eye, and after 8 hrs it was gone.. plan on seeing an eye doctor here at home. one thing thou, i have an extra air duct in my eye which allows me to blow air out my eye sockets, my instructors have heard of this before and say those divers have had no troubles diving, but the question is, are they doing something to equalize this air pocket that was not taught threw the book or in the classroom.. thank you for any help you may have for me

Hi Rich - welcome to ScubaBoard! Definitely go see an eye doctor, and an ear nose and throat specialist could help too, especially if they are a diver. But I suspect your problem is actually sinus squeeze. I found a doctor here in town that dives and she has been a great help with my sinus problems. She prescribed a daily spray called Nasonex that seems to really help. Perhaps someone else has the extra air duct you describe and can help you better than I...

John

The symptoms you describe are almost certainly related to sinus equalization problems. Seeing an ENT doc may be useful. The use of certain decongestants or steroids might open the sinus drainage passages enough to permit equalization without pain.

Sounds like something for an ENT doc, but you might better suggestions on our Medical forum. :thumb:

What dive company did you use? I was there last year and had a great time. The water was a little colder than I like...but was interesting underwater. Loved the mantas. Hope you get your medical issue resolved. Hate to think you would be unable to dive. ali

hi ali. i used vallarta adventures, first 2 dive was in the calatas, that was great, next day we went to marletas and that didn't go so well. saw a doctor yeasterday and was referred to ent and have been told should be able to take care of problem with a sinus perscription... thanks rich

Rich,

Glad to hear eye doctor was positive. Will you post the outcome in the medical forums? I'd be interested to see how it goes for you.

BTW, welcome to the board!

Welcome from Wisconsin. As said don't hesitate to see an ENT specialist in the future. Glad it worked out for you. :D
