    The Silent World Anniversary

Exactly 50 years ago to this day was a world premiere of a film "The Silent World" by Jacques Yves Cousteau and Louis Malle. It has won an Oscar, and was also a first documentary to win Palm d'Or at Cannes film festival in 1956.

This film marked the beginning of a series of underwater documentaries that were an inspiration to a vast number of today's divers and a fascination to everyone else not familiar with marine world and diving.

It also established a red wool cap as an unmistakable diving fashion statement.
Plenty of ghoti in the sea.

Holy mackerel... it's been 50 years already? Why it seems like just yesterday. Gulp!

It's hard for people today (divers and non-divers) to imagine the impact of this film. We are now used to seeing underwater footage in documentaries, TV shows and Hollywierd films so it has become quite standard in our experience. At the time it was quite groundbreaking as Mislav indicates.
Dr. Bill: I once had a 6-pack but now I have a full keg... well, maybe just a pony!
Dr. Bill: Not THAT kind of doctor... but I'll take a look at it anyway!
