But I cannot rant because I got into scuba two years ago and that was the first year I was eligible for the company bonus plan and we hit 180% of our goal, so not only did I have "found money" but I had a nice chunk of it!! So, I just signed it over to my local dive shop and didn't miss a beat... although, I did kinda go crazy on websites like eBay and ScubaToys and LeisurePro getting all the gadgets that I had no idea what they would be for but obviously were important because they were listed in the SCUBA sections (actually, I've been able to come up with a use for most of it:05: )

I'm glad I was kitted out by a good LDS (lundy, that's Mike Moore at Dive World there in Austin.) He gave me good explanations of WHY, and then WHAT, and then together we decided on WHICH. He was also the first one who told me that the same piece of gear that one can buy at Walmart will cost more if it has the word "underwater" associated with it, starting with the bungee cords by his cash register.
Since then, though, I've never left a dive shop empty-handed, even if I was just going in to check their schedule.
I was complaining about the cost with a gal in my AOW class. She explained to me that her and her husband had concluded that the key to a happy marriage was "REALLY expensive hobbies." I'm not sure why I find that so amusing, but I really do.
Ok. I'm a gadget-aholic. There. I said it.
I can't even drive past a dive shop without whipping in for a clip or a book or something. I have boxes of stuff still in the packages. I could start a dive shop with the BCDs, fins, and masks - oh, the masks. It's a fetish.
I have the library of congress of dive mags and books.
It's not a hobby. It's an obsession. I'm a gear junkie!!

In trying to keep myself motivated through the local dives, I think of the value of the "wow" factor. It goes something like this: if regular fun (seeing a movie at a mall) costs x, then splendid fun (seeing a flying gurnard with irridescent wings spread in crystal, Caribbean clarity) is worth x plus an unknown but whole bunch more.
How did we all manage to pick THE most expensive hobby ever?!
Does anyone else want to rant about stuff they bought but lost/broke/sold/don't need? I christen this the "Money Pit" thread (see cheesy 1980s Tom Hanks movie).
You got to be joking.
You want a money pit? Start racing (motorsports).
This sport is dirt cheap compared to what I spend on my other 'passion'.
