Question Save Dive Kit ? whats fair

This may be a atrange one never read it on any board before . I always carry a large Save dive kit and find myself doing a lot of repairs on site for fellow divers ( yes I have been trained ). Recently my regular dive buddy asked why I bother as its costing me money out of my own pocket . I had never thought of it that way to me im just helping out a fellow diver so they dont have to blow off a dive. were not talking the small things here like o-rings etc more along the lines of a hose here or a fin strap mask strap etc . ( guess I wouldnt make a very good shop owner ) I dont ever recall after thinking about it any of these items ever being returned after the dive . So what do others do?????

I'm in the same boat. I also tend to carry a reserve of just about everything. Of course if we're travelling as a family of 3 or 4 divers it's not so ridiculous as if I was travelling alone.
The problem is that I used to always offer my spares to divers in trouble but then I had a couple of situations were I lent out my spare and immediately needed it. This happened with a fin strap where a fellow diver snapped a strap while gearing up at the platform, I lent him my spare and he jumped in.
1 minute later my strap snapped while gearing up and I ended up aborting the dive.
On another occasion the same thing happened with my spare SPG.
Now if I go to the effort of investing in spares and carrying them around with me
just to abort a dive there doesn't seem to be much point in doing so.
So against my basic nature, nowadays I first evaluate if there is a chance of my needing the piece I'm lending/donating.

As for masks, I would never lend a mask as everyone's face is different and most silicone skirts will mold to the shape of the users face in the first hours of use - my spares are new & unused.

I would certainly not be reticent about asking for the return of loaned items. And when I make the loan I make it clear that if I need it back I will ask.

When I've loaned things people always give them back, I know I would. I mean unless it's stupid little things like o-rings. Hard to imagine someone not giving stuff back actually. Maybe it's in the way you present it, maybe say something like "here's one until you get a replacement/your's fixed/whatever" for anything you care about.

    Ask for them back.

When I "save" someone's dive with a fin strap, mask strap, buckle, etc. as I lend it to them I simply tell them to bring it back to me after the last dive on the boat. I usually get the item(s) back very quickly and receive the non-requested "Thanks, very much". Couple of times it's earned me the "Here's a Beer"... which I prefer anyway

Well I'd start by finding dive buddies who check and maintain their gear better. It sounds like a rent a wreck fleet.

The times I have loaned or borrowed it has been for the dive day. Then it was up to me to get my own permanent replacement. If I were to use a significant consumable for anothers kit I'd make it their call for cash or replacement.

My ever growing collection of assorted ramblings on scuba topics can be read here.

No sequence of classes will make a good diver out of you, if you aren't actively diving and practicing in the meantime.

My buddies arent usualy the problem its seems to be more along the lines of yahoo,s on charters that have no clue what the term annual service means.:11: you know the ones that say were going this way so you go the opposite.

I leave my stuff at home and hope to run into someone like you if I break something

Seriously, I think your friend is in the minority. The dive community is very caring and giving to its own. In most cases I would let a qualified stranger borrow a fin or mask and believe they would gladly bring it back. Let's face it, divers (for the most part) are a cut above!
