I just returned from a diving trip for lobster. We spent 3 days diving. On Saturday we were at Isthmus Point, three of the divers on my boat stayed down at 130+ longer then permitted then the tables and their computers showed the had go into deco. One of the divers prior to that dive had done the same exact thing but was not diving with a computer. These 3 divers all came back for with a lot of those yummy lobsters. None of the divers got bent which I was shocked as hell. In fact one of the divers involved had been to the chamber last year for deco sickness. The DM aboard can 2 of the 3 from diving anymore on the trip. What responsiblity does the boat have in that case with regards to stopping divers from diving anymore?

Well, sounds like they weren't too bright, going into unplanned deco. Perhaps they should watch their gauges more often.

Just because you are down longer than the tables allow does not mean you will get bent. Most tables and computers are very conservitive. What responsibiltys does the boat have? none. If they are diving with a DM or instructor then the DM or instructor should be responsible for them. But its hard to make someone surface when they dont want to.
In the end every diver is responsible for them selves. Big lobsters make (some) divers do stupid things.

OMG they're gonna Die...!!!

They're doomed!

:rofl3:

"Plan your dive, dive your plan!Computer are more conservative, watch your gauge awareness your time and depth.

It sounds like these guys did it on purpose. So the only mistake they made were on judgement.. sounds like some knuckleheads..

Out of curiosity, how did you know that their deco was "unplanned"...? Did you or the DM's talk to them about this? Maybe they had planned for going beyond their NDL's. Maybe they were diving doubles and had ample gas for expected deco requirements... Maybe they did gas planning for this... yadda yadda yadda...

now if they're racking up 10-20min deco obligations with a single al80 after blowing thru most of their air during a 30-40min 130+ft dive... then well, oh well add them to the darwin list...

Jeez, exceeding your dive comp's NDL isn't the end of the world...

Nah, at that depth most divers will have more air than NDL, so overdrawing the computer a couple of minutes is not life threatening. Depends on the divers, experience, training, skills, conditions. Calculating, accepted risk - which diving is to start with.

Hunting can cloud one's judgement, tho. Seen it happen on land.

DandyDon,

I suspect that if you took a diver with an average SAC rate they would be running out of air on an AL80 on a 130 foot dive (assuming that they had no reserve and that most of the time is based at 130 feet).
