Hey Guys,
I'm looking at going to college in California, and am just now getting my DM. I plan on doing my IDC this summer, and going to college in Cali soon after. What kind of money can I expect to make either being a DM on a local boat or doing OW courses on the side during college? I have about 500 dives under my belt as well as a ton of specialties.
Alex

If you are lucky a free boat ride on weekends for DM, and a 1/6 or so share of the tips.

I can't answer for instructor.

John

How dare you try to make money at diving.
Kidding

Good luck with this and hope you find a nice capt'n to work with. My last one was a crackhead.

Other important notes:

Average house here: $700 to 900k
There is no "Cali". You are either a SoCal or NoCal
Rescue Diver would be a recommended specialty here

SoCal: Wetsuits, good looking women, real men, professional football (Chargers), ocean/mountains/deserts all an hour away, food is Mexican and classic burgers. Official languages: English and Spanish

NoCal: Drysuits, moderate looking women who take offense easily, no real men who take offense easily if their wives okay it, no professional football, wineries within walking distance...If you move there, ask for a merlot, keeshe and bree cheese. Official language: French and Socialismese

Kidding.....:D

Wages for DM's and Instructors for both: Priceless...no, really. There is no price...Better practice asking, "Would you like fries with that order?"

Seriously, welcome aboard Alex. You will enjoy diving here...you just won't get rich doing it. Where are you going to school. (Please don't say Berkeley!)

And what's wrong with Berkeley? After all Erlichman, Halderman, Segretti, Colson, Dean, Chapin, Mardian, Magruder and Crow all went to USC.:no

If he's doing his DM now, he has Rescue Diver under his weight belt already.

The only time I've ever worked in a DM-like capacity, it was for $8.50 per hour and 1/3rd of the tips (a measely $33 since the THIRTY FIVE divers on board that day tipped a total of $100 despite the fact we gave them great service). Still, it beats being a marine biologist unless you are a great grant writer!

USC has a school? I just thought they had a football team!

They have a school, just no Ethics ... department.

Unfortunately, you forgot about the 49ers and the Raiders. I'll give you the no real men part but only for San Francisco...And of course you forgot about the best part if diving in California...Monterey which is about 2-3 hours away from the wine country...And who the heck wants to be an hour away from the desert.
