We have just gotten the DIRF class booked and we are set for May 2-4, 2003. Instructors will be Michael Kane (MHK) and Sonya Tittle. There are currently 3 places remaining in this class.

If you have any questions or to register for this class, please e-mail Jay Roney at:

jayroney@hotmail.com

Classroom lectures and post-dive debriefings will be held on the northeast side of Indianapolis (tbd) and all dives will be conducted at Blue Springs Park near Waldron, IN (about 45 min. drive from NE Indy).

The class will cost $330.00 per person. This does not include "The
Fundamentals of Diving" book, entry fees to Blue Springs, or any gear that you need.

A deposit of $200 is due immediately to reserve your place in this class.

If you need the book Jay Roney can order them for you or you can go to www.gue.com and order your own. The book costs $24 on the website and is required reading.

The class will consist of classroom lectures, land drills, 4 open
water dives, maybe 1 pool session, and video debriefs of all dives.
* Friday we will start at 4 pm SHARP to around 11 pm.
* Saturday will be from 8 am to 11 pm.
* Sunday will be from 8 am to 5 pm.
(Don't worry we will stop to eat lunch and dinner!)

Equipment requirements are listed below:
· Single or double cylinders (dual cylinders must have a dual outlet isolator manifold with two first stages).
· 2 secondary Regulators one of which must be on a 5 foot-7 foot
hose.
. One hose must supply a SPG and another a dry suit (if wearing one).
· Backplate and harness or BCD (note a back plate and harness is
recommended and will make your learning experience more enjoyable.)
· Depth gauge (wrist mounted is recommended. Try to avoid having or using a console type gauge cluster)
· Wet notes (a water proof note book to write down rock bottoms and tank factors...you'll learn these terms later.)
· Spool with at least 100 ft of line

If you need any gear I may be able to make rental arrangements for you. Again if you do not have any of these items DO NOT RUN OUT AND BUY THEM - you may not know what to look for yet (especially if you are looking for a back plate and harness).

I recommend that you do not make ANY other plans that weekend. Missing any part of the class will make it difficult for you to catch up and may negatively affect the experience for the others in the class.

This class is fast pace because they want to give you a lot of tools in a short period of time. Regardless of your current level of experience, much can be gained from this course.

What is Fundamentals of DIR?
Valuable for all divers from the newly certified openwater diver to the seasoned diver with hundreds of dives; this class is uniquely focused on enhancing your diving comfort, confidence and competence. We want you to enjoy this sport and believe this is a solid foundation to help you achieve your diving goals. This is not a certification class and no "c-card" will be given - our focus is complete dedication to your diving skill & in water practice!

After all, what good really is a "c-card" to your diving if you aren't comfortable in the aquatic environment or with your equipment? Would you enjoy the activity more if you felt more confident in your diving skills? Think of diving as a sport which deserves dedicated skill development and practice, then ask yourself how much time do you devote to your diving skills? If you want to improve your current diving skills and ultimately your enjoyment of this sport, this class is for you!

What is DIR?
DIR is a holistic style of diving that has gained notoriety through primarily through the equipment configuration. However, the Fundamentals of DIR course is much more than just an equipment configuration! When merged with other DIR skills such as team diving and precision diver control, individuals are able to appreciate a whole new way of diving, having more fun while diving safer and more responsibly. Simply put, these techniques & principles enable divers to maximize their personal abilities and eliminate some of the frustrations common in conventional diving.

The essence of these principles focus on creating a foundation of skills and procedures that serve as a platform around which divers can build from. It is valuable for basic open water excursions to the most advanced forms of technical diving.

GUE's DIR Fundamentals Course Emphasis
The DIR Fundamentals of Better Diving course instructs divers in the fundamental aspects of DIR diving, increasing diver fun and efficiency while reducing stress and diver risk. Skills will focus on: improving diver proficiency, team building skills, precision buoyancy control, perfecting diver trim, reducing drag, perfecting equipment configurations, refining propulsion techniques, improving underwater communication, effective risk evaluation and efficient dive planning. In water skills include: (Click to see video) Horizontal Asents, Horizontal Descents , Frog Kicks , Modified Frog Kicks , Modified Flutter Kicks , Helicopter Turns , Backwards Kicks , S-Drill (Safety Drill) , Valve Drill , OW Skills , Remove & replace Mask , Out Of Air , Out Of Air Ascents , Liftbag Deployment

All GUE Fundamentals courses are videotaped for educational purposes only. This is a valuable tool for the students to visually focus on their in-water skills. Dive video's are reviewed daily during the course.

Who This Course Is Designed For
The GUE Fundamentals of Better Diving course is designed all divers that want the most out of their diving. Whether you are a new openwater diver or a seasoned veteran to the diving scene, incorporating DIR principles into regular diving activities allows you to maximize diving fun and safety. Photographers and videographers will especially appreciate the detailed training in propulsion & precision buoyancy control.

Becki,

I don't know if you were aware of the latest news on this class. If not, I guess I will spill the beans.

Andrew Georgitsis, technical training director for GUE, will be involved with the Indy class as well as MHK and possibly Sonya.

Jay is waiting to see if the class will open to 12 students instead of 10 if there are three instructors. Word has it that nine of the spots were filled immediately when this class was announced. Jay could sell a condom to the Pope. Once people fing out AG is coming, they may pick up several more requests locally. AG has that affect.

I have been fortunate to meet AG, MHK and Sonya. I have done two fundamentals under AG and MHK was present at the other. Sonya was here for the class I helped sponsor. You will not be disappointed. Get a lot of sleep before the class. This class is gonna be fun as well as very educational.
