I have a VEO 100 console with an Oceanic compass that sits in a boot opposite a dive computer. Out of the boot, and away from the dive computer, the compass accurately points to north. However, opposite the dive computer and in the boot, the compass rose rotates almost 60 degrees from north, giving a false reading.
Any suggestions on what may be a fix for this? Thanks for reading.
Which console is it. It sounds like something got magnetized and is throwing the needle off! That's weird unless it's one of the swiv consoles that has some metal parts. Even so this should not be happening. You can do a couple things. One find an old tv repair guy and have him degauss the console(not practical), get a new console- one of the navcon boots,, get rid of the console and go to wrist mounted guages, call your dealer and show him what's happening. You may be able to get a replacement.

Thanks, Jim. It is the SWIV combo console. I am sending the computer back to Oceanic because it has a problem of resetting the time and date every time it shuts itself off. So I will mention it to them in the attached repair form, and go from there. I'll send the compass along, too. I want to go to a wrist boot, but, at my age, and declining near vision, it's hard to read. I use reading glasses when on the surface. Safe diving!

You don't happen to have an oceanic octo that is secured by the magnetic piece for the octo? Oceanic has a feature for some of their octos where the octo is secured by a magnet. The magnet is strong enough to affect the compass reading.
I had a similar problem sometime back with my console mounted compass. Turns out my SPG had some steel in it which was magenetized. I solved it with a demagnetizer of the type used by machine shops. (much more powerful thanTV degaussers)
When the SPG ultimately died, I replaced it with an all brass unit, permanently solving the problem.
Thanks for the tips! I really appreciate it. Actually I put the compass up against the SPG and it worked normally, and when placed over the computer, it went crazy! Well, turned to the right about 60 degrees. I had recently replaced the battery, and I wonder if that is the problem? But in any case , I've sent to computer, boot, and compass off to oceanic. The dive computer is still under warranty so we'll see what they say!
