Quick ID Tags

I have read on the accident forum of SB that is it good practice to have name/info tags on while diving - think this is true, especially on solo trips out of the country when everyone is a stranger.

Just wanted to pass this info on--Found a guy on ebay who made a few custom engraved aluminum ID tag for me.

My name/country/blood type
3 emergancy contact #'s
3 insurances/phone #'s and policy numbers (including Dan & Travelers Insurance)

His cost was only $3.50 and turn around time 1.5 weeks ;-).

DAN has some great tags that have your DAN info on them - I have one of those attached to my BC

I have the DAN tag also. Another option is Road ID. It is more for cyclists and runners and such, and more expensive than the OP's source, but it may work for some people...

IF you don't like wearing something on your wrist, I just ordered dog tags for my son from Sgt Grit, I think it was called. I included emergency numbers, etc, in case he gets hit by a car on his bike or skateboard and is unconscious. I cylce a lot in traffic and usually have my cell phone and maybe even an ID in my bento box saddle bag.

I did not want my son wearing a wrist bracelet too obvious to criminals, etc. (weird thoughts huh? ) There are some international security issues these days, particularly in Mexico concerning kidnappings of Americans for ransom. My reasoning is that a dog tag is less obvious and would probably only be found by medical personell.

I do not like the high profile wrist bands that might make someone think you are worth money or have someone that cares enough to pay a ransom, lol.

I think they would type and cross match you prior to a transfusion even if you had a tag.

One idea I had, and which we did when diving in Mexico, was to keep a photocopy of our passports with us in waterproof containers while diving. While we didn't have much worries on our cert dives, as we never went outside the bay and were never out of sight of the instructor and dive masters, we still thought it a good idea just in case. After all, if there was some medical emergency that required some kind of rapid evacuation to a hospital by either air or boat, there might not be much time to think of running back to where the real passports were stored and grabbing them before being transported miles away to a medical facility. A photocopy won't be enough for any official purposes, but it does retain the passport number and other such information that can be used to verify identity and citizenship.

DAN tags take a while to process. Was impressed with this ebay option because the tags arrived within 1.5 weeks of placing the order & I was able to include tons of information.

The cost is so inexpensive, I was able to make one just for this trip that included a temporary travel insurance policy. Certainly a good feeling to have this ID around my neck while traveling alone in developing countries (both in/out of the water).

I am sure you could include your passport or even SS# in the engraved info? Probably can add whatever you want.
