Hi ,
I am planning a trip to LA in Sept. and while I am there would like to do a few dives ....I am looking for any advice on where to stay or any good dives I could check out...I here that Catalina Island is interesting...
look forward to any info
Thanks....:)

DRbill here on scubaboard lives at Catalina, and is therefore perhaps an expert on the island.

I'm headed to Catalina in July, and am going through a dive planning place called scubaluv. I can't recall, but believe they are at scubaluv.com. In addition to arranging equipment (if you need it) and diving, They can also arrange hotel and car, if you wish.

Cheers,

Sean

Thanks,
I will check out scubaluv.com.
Let us know how your trip to Catalina goes...
:)

Catalina is a great place to dive year-round (although I prefer the tropics in winter!). Just did two dives at the Park today.

SCUBA Luv, which scubasean mentioned, is a good shop. They are the only ones that can provide nitrox.

I work part-time at Catalina Divers Supply (CDS) whose web site is www.catalinadiverssupply.com. They can provide you with almost all the services that SCUBA Luv will (except Nitrox). I do business with both shops.

I'd give the edge in dive boats to CDS though. They have a nice 46' Newton which is fast and sleek. However both are good.

I'd give another edge to CDS since they have the air fill station at the Casino Dive Park. Of course any tank can be filled there. You can dive the Dive Park easily since there are stairs leading into the water which are great except at low tide when a few rocks in front create headaches.

September is a good time to dive... water should be clear and warm. Any questions feel free to PM me.

Hi, just another suggestion. I have dove down there a couple of times and really enjoyed it. Very unique out there on the west coast.
I took a liveaboard out of Long Beach, it was called the Sand Dollar, I think. They run a definate schedule with groups booking it. Let them know when you want to dive and they will put you in touch with the group. If they have room and sound like a group you want to dive with it works out well, no hotel room costs:)

They run 1, 2 or 3 days trips. go for a 3 day if you can. The islands are all great and significantly different.

Many of the day boats there will not go out if enough divers don't show up that morning.

Going to Catalina by Ferry is easy though and that would be fun.

If you need help finding the boat PM me I have it somewhere.
Have fun.

I'm going out on Catalina Divers Supply's boat tomorrow (yeah!). I'm really looking forward to it.

Glad to hear you had such a good time on the Sand Dollar Mcrae, we're going on a three day at the end of June. I can't wait!

Peace,
Cathie

I'm there 2 - 3 times a month. PM me if you want some additional candid details about the stuff that rules and the stuff that is completely over rated.

Of course, Avalon has the compensating virtue of having its pier the same color as Uncle Pug (the boat.) If that's not a draw, nothing else is.

PM me and you'll get my twisted take on my favoriate place. But hey - its my PM so its my take! :D

You'll love it.
