Does anyone know what the laws are regarding metal detecting and removing coins etc from MD and VA rivers and also lakes? I just received a Whites Beach Hunter ID machine.
Well I called the DNR in MD and talked to an enforcement officer. He said metal detecting was illegal everwhere in MD waterways and I would be arrested and fined at least $5000 and my detector confiscated. And that MD owns the Potomac too. MD has a reputation for environmental extreemism so I wonder if he was correct or not.
Someone also said that it was illegal everywhere in VA but you could go if you bought a permit.
Illegal everywhere raises my suspicions and makes me think they are wrong or just trying to discourage detecting.
I've also asked two dive shop and they did not know.
