BITE BACK
A CHANCE TO MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD
By John Nightingale

LAST YEAR the Bush administration gave the US Navy permission to deploy its Low Frequency Active (LFA) sonar system over 75 per cent of the world's oceans, despite a mass of evidence indicating that it can injure marine mammals. At close range, LFA sonar can destroy a whale's eardrums, cause its lungs to haemorrhage and even kill it. At a test two years ago in the Bahamas it caused mass strandings of four different species, all showing haemorrhaging
around the eyes and ears, indicating severe acoustic trauma. During tests, a scuba diver was exposed to 14 minutes of LFA noise at 160 decibels (the sound level 100 miles away from the source!), and experienced uncontrollable shaking in his limbs before going into a seizure that recurred for days afterwards. The National Resources Defense Council in the US successfully got a temporary injunction to stop the LFA activity, the judge agreeing that the science clearly demonstrates 'the possibility, indeed probability, of irreparable injury to marine animals'. The Navy is still determined to deploy it. Tell George W. Bush that the oceans and its contents are not his to destroy, email president@whitehouse.gov.

Could you please do a search on LFA sonar? We already have about two threads running on it. The debate was getting into politics which can get rather heated. :)

You could check those out for the responses on the board then so that people don't feel the need to repeat themselves and rile each other up again. My own views are even in one of those threads as are a couple of our resident researchers and political analysts. :)

It may be better to continue those than to get the topic going yet again. And we may all learn more when those threads are "pushed up" from having been read and posted to recently.

Why confuse them with facts ,the title alone is a declarative statement not a question.Try snopes or about .com for links to both sides of the story.I would be one of those "heated " individuals.

Quit feeding the 1 post troll...

Doing a search for LFA on the forums, I realized that this there are two other previous threads on the subject. The original one posted on 6/10/03.
I appreciate the added information from all. My pessimism had be tempered by the additional information provided.

Reference these two previous forum links were the topic has been covered at length:
