Cline's Diving Industry Survey Results

First Quarter 2010 Dive Business Survey

Cline's first quarter 2010 Dive Industry Survey is in and a total of 233 dive businesses responded to this survey and indicated the following results:

All dive businesses saw, on average, a 2.1% increase in their gross revenues for the 1st quarter 2010 versus the same period in 2009. This is the first time Gross Revenues were up in almost two years!

Retailers specifically were down, reporting a -5.4% decrease in their overall gross revenues in the 1st quarter of this year.

New certifications were also down as retailers posted an average decline of -5.1%. Independent instructors also posted a -.7% decrease in certifications.
Dive travel sales were down -4.2% specifically for retailers.

Dive equipment sales were also off, as retailers posted a -7.3% decline in sales.

For the first time in many quarters, the average gross sales for all respondents was a positive number. This may signify we have reached the 'bottom' of the downward sales trend, and signal a recovery in the works for the diving industry.

> Overall, retailers responded as follows for a projected INCREASE in their 2nd quarter outlook for gross revenues:
Eastern US: +48%
Central US: +35%
Mountain US: +75%
Pacific US: +50%

As shown, retailers everywhere are optimistic about their 2nd quarter '10 Gross revenues increasing.

> Independent Instructors posted a drop in certification numbers posting a -.7% loss in the 1st quarter of 2010. However, just like retailers, they are optimistic in their 2nd quarter '10 certification numbers (45% say will increase).

Summary:

> Internationally, businesses by region responded as follows for an projected INCREASE in their 2nd quarter '10 gross revenues:
USA: +49%
Carib/S. America: +44%
Canada: +20%
All Other Regions: +40%

> When looking at a combined response of the travel sector (resorts, wholesalers & liveaboards), the average company posted a 4.2% gain in their 1st quarter 2010 gross revenues as compared to the same period in 2009.

Their outlook is also very optimistic as almost 50% expect to see a gain in their expected revenues for the 2nd quarter of 2010. This data is similar to the 4th quarter of 2009, again signaling a possible recovery in the travel sector.
