Help! What is the difference between NAUI and PADI?? I have just signed up for certification with a NAUI diving instructor. Does this limit me in any way? Does it really matter whether I am PADI or NAUI certified?
Thanks, Heather

Hello Heather,

The short answer -

NO, it doesn't matter (both are pretty equal and are accepted worldwide).

A more clear and exact answer -

Once again the mother of all questions sticks its head out. Your question is one that can get a very loaded or heated debate going. Many people believe as strongly about COMPANY A as others feel about COMPANY B. When I personally look at them they all have things I really like and equally things I don't like. What it really boils down to is finding the one that's right for you.

A more important question than "Which Agency" is "Which Instructor". All certification agencies in the US meet the same minimum standard for entry-level certification. Many instructors hold cards from several agencies. The bottom line is really the Instructor not so much the agency for your initial certification. There are good Instructors and bad Instructors. Ask questions and feel comfortable.

Here are what is considered to be the Top 3 agencies and here is a list of All Known Certifying Organizations and Diver Associations.
I hope this helps, and if there is anything else I can help you with let me know.
=-)

Hello Heather,

Have you started or even finished your open water training yet? If so what did you think? Care to share anything with us?

I refer you to the thread in the general scuba discussion about PADI / CMAS equivalents!

They say they are accepted worldwide, but they obviously haven't heard about France.

Been here 4 weeks, and not got a dive in.

Argh not CMAS again Jon :) How did you go-on?

CMAS being a multilingual organisation who teach on both english and french, decided to ditch teaching in english. Does this sound like a organisation that is trying to move into the new milleium?

Nope.

Still not able to dive.
