    PADI vs NAUI

    Hello,
My wife, son and I are going to take SCUBA lessons very soon. We have both NAUI and PADI centers near us. Can anyone explain the differences,if any, between the two.
    Thank You

This has been beaten to death. A quick search should yeild the information you're looking for.

It's not specifically about PADI v NAUI, but it's good advice.

Or we could be nice to the newby and give him the 2 sentence summary:

The difference between individual instructors is much greater than the difference between certifying agencies like PADI and NAUI. Go talk to the prospective instructors and choose based on that.

How would that be helpful? It wouldn't tell him what questions to ask. He'd be as clueless after talking to them as before. Besides, that first sentence, while true, is misleading. There are big differences between agencies and while there are exzceptions (which make the sentence true), in general, you can usually know what will be in a particular class beased on agency.

Folks, most of you don't remember what it was like when you first joined this board ... or you've been here so long you don't realize the changes that have occured on this board over the past couple of years.

We're approaching a million posts. Just logging on here and trying to navigate the forum is almost overwhelming for someone new to the community. Performing a search on NAUI vs PADI will bring up literally hundreds of threads. Unless you're a professional researcher, it's a daunting task.

On the other hand, those of us who participated in those threads can still perform a valuable service by providing a pointer or two.

Or, you could simply refrain from responding to the question rather than telling a new member to "go do a search" ... although I'm sure it's well intended, it does come across as rather unfriendly to our newer members.

Not everyone who reads SB is looking to learn how best to use their new snorkel. Some are here just hoping to get the chance to tell someone else exactly what they can do with their new snorkel. While others are trying to sell their old snorkel. (gypsyjim)

The certification agency should be transparent to the consumer. Visit each shop and find the one that has staff, services, facilities, trips, etc that appeal to you.

The one that when you leave you have the warm feeling inside that you were treated as a human. Then go with that shop.

skinautique, also be aware that PADI and NAUI have different teaching
    philosphies.

while this is bound to be an over-simplification, PADI emphasis "necessary" knowledge
to get you in the water quickly, while NAUI conducts more in-depth coverage
    of topics.

like everybody else said, it's really the instructor that matters. a good instructor
will have you covered, whether NAUI or PADI.
