Probably at least 80%. To clarify this if your skimming the tops of the wrecks than no, but if you are penetrating and going close to the bottom than 80 or even 90% would be a true estimate. The only wreck I can remember that's shallow is a wreck of an airplane where some even snorkel.
DO any of you dive with a bp/w? If so, what do you dive? I'm looking at buying a set-up. I'm looking at a Hollis set-up. Any thoughts??
Yes. You first need to define what type of diving you would be using it for now and if you have any future thoughts of moving to more technical diving.
For example when I travel to Thailand and expect to do some recreational OC diving I would bring my AL BP, single web harness and 30Lb lift Venture Wing. Its small, light and adequate for diving with a single 80cu ft tank. And I require only maybe 3-4 kg of weight on a belt to sink in a 3 mm full wetsuit. This would not be the same setup I would use if I was going to dive in cold water, or expected to do some deeper or deco dives.
As a general comment you can fullfill your needs successfully at a much more value price point with some other manufacturers but it your decision whom to give you hard earned cash too.
I will most likely only dive in the tropics. So I imagine that a wing anywhere from 17lbs to 30lbs would me more that enough. Also, I like the idea of SS plate. I know for travel purposes it's a burden but I like the idea of the weight over my lungs instead of my waist.
What I'm wondering is if any of us do dive with a BP/W, what do you dive and do you like it. Also, if given the choice which brands would you buy. I see I can buy a Halcyon setup here in Thailand for around 22,000 http://www.dazsscuba.co.th/component...id,1/vmcchk,1/
I can also get a Hollis setup that is very similiar but with a 25lbs wing for around 16,000. With the Hollis setup, no STA is needed. It looks to be very well made.
Cheers...Jon
btw I was thinking DSS but there are no dealers here in BKK unless someone in our group is in the US and coming to THailand in the next few months that wouldn't mind carrying it along.
You really need to determine if a SS BP will cause you to be overweighted in the exposure suit you will be using. If not then its not an issue. One other thing you can do with a AL BP if you want the weight over your back is to install weight pockets onto the two cam straps. This then allows you to insert whatever weights (type and amount) they have at your dive destination. Each pocket will hold up to 5 lbs of solid or soft lead weights. This also gives you the advantage of moving things around to get your trim just right. The one downside you need to think about is ditchable weight if needed especially if you lose bouyancy on your wing.
Proper weighting and redundant bouyancy is a whole seperate topic.
A very basic but functional and expandable system would consist of a BP with single hogartian harness and up to 30lb wing. Good used ones are often for sale and you could pick up the entire kit for under 10,000 THB. Usually you need to buy each piece seperately. The most common vendor I see in the USA for this setup is Diverite. You just need to be careful to ensure the wing and BP have the capability for two cambands to be threaded. Most do but I have seen some that do not.
The Hollis or Halcyon setups are premium priced equipment. I have used many different types and setups and there is really not any difference that would be meaningful for your type of diving. My setup for warm water diving is a Diverite AL BP with a Diverite Venture Wing, single piece webbing harness and two cam bands.
Also, if you use two cam bands to hold the tank on you do not really need a STA. You could also get someone to make one up in Thailand with a piece of U channel AL cut to the size you want and with a couple holes drilled for bolting it to the BP.
Too bad you did not mention this a month ago when I was there as I could have sold you mine since I have decided to approach the recreational diving setup from a cave diving perspective and use a side mount rig.
Next BKK Diver's meeting will be on August 13 @ Larry's (7pm) and the plan is to dive on Sept 12th but that may have to be moved. At the meeting we can get an idea of numbers and narrow down a firm date. This should allow the maximum number of regulars to join our "first" outing.
I bought a Zeagle Stiletto and sweet Pinnacle dive skin while in the US. Not as flash as Jon's new BP/W...
Peter are you willing to share some of your latest video as mentioned before?

I should be able to come to the meeting on the 13th. But I am not sure if I'll have any video in presentable form by then. We just got back yesterday and I have at least 7 hours of video to edit. If not this meeting, then definitely the next.
But Truk was fantastic. So I'll be very happy to tell you some stories...
