It's an easy trip to do from Thailand and quite cost effective. But you gotta be there at the right time of year (right around Chinese New Year) and as part of an organized group.
Great trip report! We may be able to entice BKK Divers as the water temp you mention is 25c Avoiding commercial advertising by trip promoters in this part of the forum is a good thing, but perhaps we can coordinate something for next year. Can you post a link for those interested or would you be willing to help coordinate a trip like this next year?
I'm actually moving to Europe in a couple of months, so unfortunately unlikely to be able to repeat this trip next year.
A few additional notes on how to put together a trip like this. The key to making it a success is joining an organized group. Even if you speak fluent Chinese you will find it impossible to do completely independently. These are somewhat specialized dives. The shop owner who runs them is the only guy on the Green Island that is capable and comfortable with taking divers to the right spot. Currents can be very strong and the exposed location means high waves, so a good level of diving experience is prerequisite. Also, since the dive is deep, and you want to stay deep to see the sharks, Nitrox becomes necessary and a Nitrox cert should also be required.
The sharks are there only during winter months. Due to Taiwan's vacation schedule, these trips are always scheduled for the Taiwanese Chinese New Year Holiday week. This fact makes it extra difficult to organize from outside Taiwan. I purchased my plane tickets many many months in advance and had the help of a good friend in Taipei for arranging domestic travel. Even so, and with ample warning, my Taipei friend had serious difficulties getting me train tickets. In the end we pulled it through, but it required an extra overnight stay in Kaohsiung on both directions.
In case you haven't seen it yet, I finished an animation of the Suddhadib before her sinking. It is a 3 minute film, 2 out of which are pure animations. Have a look at our website:
Would like to inform all of you that I have added an exciting new feature to our website, pattaya-scuba.net: the BEAUTY GALLERIES! A great showcase of digital underwater photography of shots taken around Pattaya waters by a broad roster of divers.
Unlike the previous galleries in the website (the Sea Life Archive and the Dive Site Galleries) which were more educational and informative in nature, these new galleries are all about the joy of taking pictures while diving.
They are categorized into 10 themes to give them more focus and to inspire divers to keep themes like these in mind when shooting pictures.
Hope you all enjoy them and if you yourself have a few great dive shots that are growing mold on your hard disk, please send them in for inclusion!! Only condition: they have to be from Pattaya dive sites.
