Thanks to Arizona we have our own club pages here at Scubaboard. I see that we have 18 members now but other than a few that I've met at our meetings, I don't know who's really here.
Perhaps we can all introduce ourselves and tell a bit about our interests, location, meeting availability, dive experience, etc.
My Name's Jon and I've lived in Thailand for over 5 years now. I did my open water at Chumphon Cabana around 2 years ago. Since then I've dove Similans, Taratao, Tao/Chumphon Pinnacle, Pattaya, Samaesan and most recently at Pulau Weh in Aceh Indonesia.
I live in Bangkok but don't do much weekend diving since I don't have the free time.
Planning to take my Rescue course this year. Also interested in improving my picture taking so I'd love some pointers and would be interested in going on some kind of photo class/trip in the future.
Next trip is Bali and on my list: Palau, Phils, Manado, and Sipidan.
Jon

Thanks for getting this thread started John. I too have been in Thailand longer than I would have thought. So far it has been 3 years, but I managed to complete my OWSI cert last summer. Just getting a local group together seems like a good idea. I am not really into formal clubs with offices and such, but rather setting up meeting times to socialize and let people do what they want. A few others have expressed a desire for more organization. I am happy to let things evolve but personally like it to be a little less formal.
Keeping it non shop affiliated should remain part of the group. Great to prevent the insta-buddy syndrome and dive with some regulars. Planning trips in the region and sharing things learned along the way is all good.
I'll be at TDEX at 400pm tomorrow. I know John and Sundance will be there. I hope to meet up with Peter and catch his coral reef presentation. So you can recognize me if you show up I'll be donning the Arizona Sun Devil's baseball cap.
While i have never been able to make it out to a meeting, I still live in Bangkok and would like to meet everyone at some point in the future!
Ive been in the Big Smoke for just over 6 months- but Im taking a little bit of a break right now. Just finished a 10 day (EXPENSIVE!) trip to Raja Ampat, and im in Bali for a while before I head off to Manado. After that, its Sipadan for a DM course. Should be back in Bangkok by the end of August(?). Hopefully I dont run out of money first...
OW done on Tonsai Beach, near Railay, with (then) Hydra Divers. AOW completed on Koh Lanta with Lanta Diver before the murder of Hin Muang/Daeng a few years back.
Other than that I have spent most of my time in the Andaman. Phi Phi, Similans 2x, Hin Muang/Daeng, some local islands. I made it out to Koh Tao once with Phanang Divers (was staying on Koh Phanang) and was scared away by the operator and the terrible diving. (Theres a good story to tell over a few beers!)
Good luck with the DM course! I imagine Sipadan is a great place to do that. I'm actually trying to plan a trip there for Next Songkran. Airasia has free tickets at the moment.
How about the other 16 or so members out there? Let's hear your story.
Hello everybody, like most people, came to Thailand for a 6 month contract, and that was 5 years ago! Im an OWSI and EFRi, did my IDC with Crystal in Koh Tao, DM was done on an extended break of 4 months in the Philippines!
My name is Vie. I'm a local, born in Bangkok, and have been living here since '03 after long stints in the UK and US. I do most of my recreational diving in Pattaya.
I have been a NAUI DMC for a long time (perhaps too long) and hope to complete the course soon. I am also a GUE T2 diver. I love diving but am not involved in the industry.
The way is to the destructive element submit yourself,
and with the exertions of your hands and feet in the water
make the deep, deep sea keep you up...
Great to have you aboard Vie. I learned to dive in Thailand so I feel like a "local". I bet we have met at some point as I dive Pattaya fairly often as well. Have you done any cave diving? I know that is getting more popular.

Well just to convince you guys that you need to get Cave certified here is a link to the video we made on a dive in Abaco Bahamas a couple months back. This was not even the best cave we were in but the others were too small and fragile with decorations to take the big camera in. At the start of the video I am the second guy walking down the stairs. The dive was 3 hours duration and we were close to a mile into the cave. If you have a slow connection it will take sometime to download the movie since it in HD.
