Does anyone know where I can go to dive in nice, warm, calm water AND have a personal divemaster for about 5 days or more? I am certified, but haven't been diving since certified. I really would like to get into this, but am still afraid and don't truly understand the "charts".

Mary,

How long has it been since you were diving? By the "charts" do you mean the dive tables used to compute your decompression status?

I know there are private Dive Masters and Instructors for hire in Kihei on the island of Maui. I saw their ads all the time when I was there. That sounds like a great idea!!

I've been good for WAY too long.

There is no mathematics involved with using dive tables beyond 1st grade arithmetic. If you made it that far can follow a line (use a straight edge to make it easier) and can read, the tables (any set of tables) are a snap.

In closing, I'll quote Lazarus Long:

"Anyone who cannot cope with mathematics is not fully human. At best he is a tolerable subhuman who has learned to wear shoes, bathe, and not make messes in the house."

Unless, of course, you're a Palm Beach County voter! :goofy:

Mary,
I should have looked up your profile to see where you live. But I didn't. So please, do tell.
If you're in the US, there are tons of inexpensive possibilities for you. Florida, Mexico, and the Bahamas.
When I first started diving I didn't know another diver. I went down to the Keys and the Bahamas and paid the divemasters $40.00 a dive to be my buddy.
Some people might think this was too much, but I still feel it was well worth it!
I even think they made me a better diver in some ways. Kinda like when I play tennis with a player that is better then me. I get my butt kicked, but I always feel I learned something.
Have fun. Glad to see you're getting back into it.
And, check out the dive tables again, there really is nothing hard about them. Believe me if I can do it anyone can. My major was geography and not math at all!
