I'm a Fish!
This thread is non scuba related but I felt it was appropriate since we need computers to contribute here...

I fried my computer the other day while overclocking it. So I've been borrowing my roommates machine to be with you guys. After a lot of research I picked up a new Abit KT-7 motherboard, two Dimms of PC133 256Mb Ram, a 30 Gig ATA100 7200rpm Harddrive, new power supply and a AMD 800Mhz processor so I'm starting from scratch. I'll be building it tonight.

Get this my roommate bought the same exact stuff today only with a brand spankin new AMD Thunderbird 1.2Ghz and the L1 bridges aren't cut! Can you say 1.4 Ghz easily with a 200 Mhz front side bus! Smokin! Who knows who else we have out there that tinkers...

Anyone have anything to contribute here? Do we have any Guru's willing to share their wisdom?

Man, you're talking Greek to me!

O.K. now I'm a bit peeved! I swapped out all my new devices, even swapped out the 3.5 floppy, CD-Rom drive and my GeForce for a 3dfx and it's still not working! I'm getting a CMOS Checksum error... Anyone know how to fix my problem?

I now have a new:

  • Power supply
    Motherboard
    RAM
    CPU
    3 Fans
    Floppy
    CD-Rom
    Hard drive
What the heck is left!?!

I think I'm going to go see if this thing will float... I'll show it who's boss when we get into my domain!

I'm not that great on AMDs but I do know they have an issue with some power supplys. You said you replaced yours, what did you replace it with? Is it on the AMD "approved" list?

Also try this...Remove all everything from the case except 1 stick of RAM, processor, power supply, motherboard, and video card and floppy drive. Will it boot from a floppy now? If not try swapping the RAM in different slots and using your other stick.

Sounds like Ram chip. If warhammers idea dosn't work try using a standard video card just for test purposes. The next thing is a bios flash.

I build 'em with AMD all day long and never had one not match up with a power supply. That shouldn't cause a checksum error even if there was a problem though.

Good looking out guys. Here's the latest: I still can't get it to go through a boot up. I did however just put my roommates 1.2 Gig machine together which is identical to mine with the exception of the CPU and it works just fine. In fact it screams!

So right now I'm on a Dell P3 1Gig machine. I yanked my old hard drive from my computer and slapped it into this one but, it's not recognizing it. I've got the jumpers set to slave but it's still a no go. So what I'm going to do over the weekend is drop my AMD off at a tech facility, install mt old harddrive into the new 1.2 and transfer files from it to this 1Gig. We're all networked so it should work just fine. Meanwhile I'm still very peeved at the 800 unit.

Tom do you use ICQ?

No I don't use ICQ. But my Email checks every 10 min. When I'm in the shop it's not to hard to find me. Service call days may take a while though. den(at)ctive.com

Won't be on any more tonight
Gotta work in the morning.
Have 2 AMD's to build

Tom

You lost me somewhere in that last post, Mario. I doubt it's a bad proc though. Why not try your new ADM in your roomates machine? In fact you could also check out your new RAM that way and visversa. I agree with Tom, it sounds like a RAM problem to me. Do you have your old RAM or did you fry it as well?

Ahhh the woes of overclockers, a distink breed.:)

Picked up some more PC133 Ram as well, that didn't seem to solve the problem either. I'll give it another shot later on towards morning when I'm done with all the other stuff I need to do.

Well, I'm at the end of my rope. The last thing I can possibly do is swap out the motherboard. I picked one up yesterday, but have been so busy here, that I haven't had the time to fiddle with it.

Thank you for all of the help over the phone Tom, it's not everyday that someone from a completely different state drops what they're doing and makes a long distance phone call to aid someone in a computer related crisis. Your effort and enthusiasm will be remembered.
