Hello to all, just surfing and found this site! Cool beans.

As promised, quickie...

Travel dates: 3rd week in Jan 01
mode: looking for airfare/possible package deals

hoping to plan cheap trip (student) with boyfriend before serious study goes down...

In Boston, MA and plan to get certified there (where ever that is...smirk) as new beau is veteran diver.

Thanks! need to jet now, but will check out in AM and through out...

Hi me again! Just a little something about self as new on the board. I 28 yrs and in school. I love the ocean. However, super sucked when trying to body surf this past summer; no waves! ahhh! and wicked cold out here...even in August--smirk.

I'm from southern california and love the beach boys but don't know much about scuba out here.

Is there a different area I can post my question below; no replies as of yet.

...any info would be well received:)

Where are most members from?

Happy Holidays!!!

Risa

Risa,
I did my open water certification in Cozumel. I was very happy with the instructor and the whole set up there.
The water is usually warm and the visability is great. Both of these things make getting certified a whole lot better experience, in my opinion.
Mexico is probably the best bang for your buck too.

Risa,

Look in any Scuba magazine for Continental Airlines packages for Cozumel. The seat on the airplane will be in coach, but students probably are used to that!

Or you can arrange it with Island Dreams a 800-346-6166--that is in Houston. They have a great arrangement with the Fiesta Americana Hotel and the Dive House--an excellent package. But I think that Continental is cheaper.

The diving, the food and the accommodations in Mexico are the least expensive that I know of. Diving is about $50-60 for a two-tank morning dive. Food will cost about $30-50 a day, depending on your choice or restaurant, etc. Rooms and hotels run from $35 for a room (cannot give any references) to $100 for a "normal" hotel to $200 for the El Presidente.

The diving is great. 50-100 ft vis every day. H20 temp has never been lower than 78 degrees for the many times that have dived there. Air temp varies, but this time or year it will be around 80-85 degrees.

On a night when you want to splurge for dinner, try the French Quarter. About $20-40 depending on drinks, etc., but absolutely the best food in Cozumel. Stay away from Palmeras--terrible. The Cactus is okay. The lime soup and Guacamole at the outdoor restaurant at El Presidente is great! Really, try the lime soup: it is Mayan/Aztec/Mexican "chicken soup" that is just wonderful.

Hope this helps.

Have fun

Where's Don when we need him?

Surely I don't know how to answer that.

By the way - Hi Risa

I agree - gotta have the lime soup

Inexpensive (but very nice) place to stay in Cozumel, unless you're into the resort or party thing, is Hacienda San Miguel.

Find them at (where else?) http://www.haciendasanmiguel.com
