Hello fellow enthusiasts.

I've just completed my Open Water course and am eager to set out on my first dive trip.

Can anyone give recommendations for a location? I live in London and can't get too far away - although I'd love a trip to the South Seas. I've been told the Red Sea is generally not ideal for a novice.

Thanks!!

I don't know what to say. I wouldn't take Europe as a start. You need something shalow and full of interesting things. I haven't heard of anything like this in Europe.
Mediterana could be a good choice, the spanish islands. Just an ideea, I do not have a lot of info.
Try to go in the Indian Ocean, that's the real place you need to start with.. warm water, shalow dives possible, icredible marine life, you can go only with mask and a snorkel.

Hiya Louie

Firstly welcome to scuba and secondly welcome to the board!

I am quite close to you (Colchester, Essex) and to be honest the diving round England isn't what I'd call comfortable - especially for new divers.
I am a Rescue Diver and even I dont feel comfortable in these waters!

Where abouts did you do your training? Was it in the UK?

I started my diving in Greece. Although there wasn't a lot of exotic marine life it was great as it helped me get use to the equipment and bouyancy etc.

I know a great place in Greece - an island called Zakynthos. You can get a really cheap holiday from it too - in the sun. I have been there 5 times in a row! If you want some info on the area and great places to stay email me: xpigletbabyx@aol.com
or go to http://www.zanteguru.com

Take care

Dear Louie

I just started diving last month, in Egypt (Red Sea). As a neophyte, I cannot give any advice, but I thought the Red Sea was wonderful, even though I had no idea what I was doing. The instructors know where to take the divers with little/no experience and will generally plan the tour accordingly.

I will tout Jasmine Diving in Hurghada, as I had a great time. I plan to return soon.

Also, the Red Sea is not THAT far away and there are two airports to fly into: Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada. The are plenty of good package tours.

Welcome to the scubaboard: enjoy!!

Louie,

Most of the diving in the UK is done through the local club. The best thing that you can do is to join a local club, they will have allsorts of diving organised, UK diving, red sea diving etc..

They will also help you with further quals + you will be regularly diving with people you know.

Diving is WAY expensive if you only want to go abroad and dive (unless you have the cash that is...), UK diving is much underated, get with a good bunch of people and enjoy!
