Thanks to all who responded with helpful information and suggestions for my trip to Cancun.

We just returned yesterday and had a terrific time. We dove with Scuba Cancun and they treated us quite well. Of course the diving is not the same as Cozumel, but the reefs are in good condition and there is a lot of good fish and plant life. We saw nurse sharks, scorpionfish, green and spotted eels, angels, doctors, surgeons, goats and grunts and yada yada yada . . . lots of fish.

It does seem that the concept of divers determining their profile based on skill and training, plus use of computers, are not yet considered here. The dive shops we spoke with (three in number) all set the profiles and the bottom time based on tables . . . NO VARIATION. And they are absolutely anal about staying close, CLOSE, to the divemaster. But, in fairness to them, the skill level of most of the divers left much to be desired. Since Cancun isn't a primary dive destination, most of the divers were just taking the opportunity since they were somewhere with water. Few divers had more than 20 dives total, many were newly certified or certifying.

Scuba Cancun does not run cattleboats or take snorklers on the dive trips. We dove three days with them and never met any divers doing "resort dives."

Anyone wanting additional information about the trip can email or respond, I'll be glad to share.

Happy and Safe diving!

Sorry just couldn't resist.he he

Thanks for the report on Scuba Cancun. Chances are my wife and I will give them a try sometime this year or early next year. I'd like to get cavern certified first though, so I can check out the cenotes. Did you get a chance to take a day trip to Coz?

A friend of mine recommended Scuba Cancun. I had called them and referred to two friends that I am bringing that want to snorkel. They said that would not be a problem coming along. I will let you know how it turns out.

Just remember Cancun is a party town! Cozumel has ca. 85 "dive shops", and Cancun has 10 times that many bars and cantinas. Also make sure you go there at a time when Spring Break is not in progress--unless you are single and "hunting"!

If you like shopping (God forbid!), Cancun is about 10 notches better than Cozumel, but you can always take the ferry from Coz if you are in the mood or mode.

Still, I like Mexico and Cancun has its merits.

Happy shopping, KMart customers!
