Just found this site, looks really good. I have just decided to do my diving cert. Have a real big fear of sharks, especially as all the big angry sharks live here in South Oz !!! Looking forward to getting in to it and look forward to chatting with you all.

Welcome to scuba and welcome to the boards.

There are a lot of people here that would love to see those sharks. Just be gentle with them and smile real friendly-like.

Mick, welcome to the family, it's great to have you aboard. We're glad that you've found us, and hope you help us in spreading the word.

The more you educate yourself about sharks, the less you will fear them. They really aren't the mindless killing machines most people believe them to be. I've been fortunate enough to dive in several of the biggest Great White Shark breeding grounds (San Fransisco, New Jersey, and Southern Australia) and other breeding areas for Tiger Sharks (like Hawaii, South China etc.) and have never run into any misbehaving ones.

Have no fears buddy, have fun, join us on some organised trips.
Sea you in the Deep Blue.

Hey Mick

Welcome a-board! (sorry - bad joke!)

I also have a major fear of sharks - never dived with them before - well never seen them on a dive.

Thats why I am jumping in the deep end. I figure if I dive with the shark most people fear then its cool and trendy. I plan to go out Mario's way next year and do some Gt White diving! Eeekk!

But this year I am going deep south Red Sea so I am likey to swim into the shark I fear the most but is really harmless - the hammerhead! Even tho I know they arent going to attack or anything I wont be comfortable till I dived with them and got the 1st time out the way.

I figure its like riding a bike. Once you have done it once to you dont think twice next time!

Speak to you laters!

Mick,

Hi there!

Sharks are great, and probably a large part of why I started diving in the first place. Its always a priviledge to see a shark on a dive, as they are certainly a lot thinner on the ground (ok in the water!) than they used to be.

I've seen a few in my time, and the problem is not how to avoid them, but how to get close enough to them to take their picture! I'm positive your attitude will change in time.

Being from Australia, I have some questions for you... a/ Do you have any knowledge of the extent of the crown of thorns infestation currently on the GBR? b/ Do you know anyone who has been on one of Rodney Fox's trips to see the Great Whites?

Anyway Mick, welcome to the board!

Sorry mate, not sure on your questions.
I know that the GBR is having it's share of problems apart from the one you mentioned, there has been a tanker grounded there aswell which caused damage that could take some time to repair.

As for Rodney Fox, I dont know of anyone personally that has gone on the trip but his shark museum is here in Adelaide where I live. He also has a web page http://www.rodneyfox.com.au. A very interesting story behind Rodney, well worth a look.

If I find anything new I will post it.

Thanks

Thats good reading King_Neptune.
I think my fear of sharks comes from the fact that I was born in England (Essex) and lived in Ireland (Kinsale) before I came to Australia. Going from a country where nothing bites, poisons or attacks to a country that has just about every deadly animal known to mankind is something that takes a long time to get used to
Interesting reading about the claustrophobic point of view, my girlfriend thought she would be claustrophobic but she thinks she can overcome it
