Hello, I am interested in Commercial diving, could anyone answer a few ?'s. Is it worth going to a diving school?
Does the job pay well? I know its hard work but is it worth it? If anyone can answer my Question's I would greatly apreciate the input. Thanks

I know a old retired commercial diver that works there. He was in it before all the safety factors and has lost 6 fingers and his hearing. He has told me of some of the good changes and can give you alot of un-biased facts and opinions. Ask for Vic (800) 342-0640

cyclone, have you tracked down the info you were looking for regarding commercial diving? If not I can get you in touch with some people as well.

Hi cyclone. Well my friends uncle is a commercial diver on an oil rig. Over here in the UK a commercial diver can apparently earn anything from 150,000 - 350,000 pounds (stirling) per annum...alot of money heh. Its payed highly mainly because it is an inherantly dangerous job. However, there are times when you have to spend days and days in a re-pressurising chambre with maybe 3 other men, not my idea of a great job. Here are a couple of sites for you:-

I hope this helps cyclone :)

Cyclone:

I was a commercial oilfield diver for 10 years & loved every minute; I'd still be there now but for the want of a life beyond the deepsea, you see, "the life" demands your all...if your not willing to give it don't even consider it.

With a good attitude & your bags always packed & by the door you will get:
* a reasonable living. There is some big money out there but it goes to the top 20% in the field; the average diver will make 70k-100k in a good year.
* travel...you gotta go where the work is or you don't.
* Great adventures...commercial divers remain some of the most interesting characters around & the camraderie is second to none.
*the ultimate in "Tech. diving"...forget multiple bottles & redundant regs., you are now a hard-hat diver, that means surface-supplied gases, saturation complexes & remotely operated vehicles to name but a few. And there is depth, very ,very big depth for those who pursue it.

What you won't get:
* a stable marriage
* any semblance of a "normal" social life
* land legs
* statuatory holidays off
* a pension
* bored

You could be an inshore diver, but that ain't "the life".Its more like a regular construction job except you do it underwater. Not to say these guys aren't good, au contraire'...they can take their construction skills & apply them anywhere in any type of diving job. Never forget, you are paid for what you can do, not because you know how to get there.

Go to This Link & read & ask your question.
The best of luck to you, mate!

Hello Deepsea, welcome to the boards. I'm looking forward to hearing some of your colorful 'sea stories' regarding commercial diving. Just out of curiosity, what is it you do now?

Mario...

Thanks for the welcome. I am now a Firefighter...this career provides me more of the adrenalin rush that was a large part of the deepsea experience. I guess I've come full circle in diving as I now Instruct scuba. As Firefighters now assist the ambulance service to a great extent I have been able to utilize my Diver-Medic skills on the job & I take some of those stories to the classroom when teaching Ist Aid.

Sea stories...hhhmmmmm...yea, I got a few! I can't get :5 into teaching a scuba class without launching into another edition of "there I was..." I'll see what I can dish up for the good readership of this fine forum.

Again, thanks for your hospitality!

Thanks for the input Mario, deepsea and everyone. I've called a few dive companies and always come to the conclusion that it's real hard work and even dangerous work, and not to undertake it, but the money, travel, outdoors and total experience lures me back (and cause I'm only 19, I don't have many work related experiences like this). So I'm thinking," what if do inland diving for a while (2-6 years) while going to college for something else" my question is, is this job flexible enough to go to college during? and also I was talking to this old ex-navy dude and he said it makes you go crazy, could this me true or was he the crazy one? Yeah the people in New Jersey say "in five Months time you can be making $30-55.000 a year" and that makes My $15.000 look so very small. Thanks again everyone for the input.

I hope you're still young (in your 20s), otherwise forget it. Here's a few sites to check out:

There's also the law enforcement side of it:

For the military angle, Go Navy:

Also Barry University in Florida has a degree program for recreational diving:
