I use a separate STA since it's a little faster and easier for me to rig harnesses and switch tank sizes since I use 8", 7.25", and 7' tanks. My wife only uses her HP100's, but I still have a STA on her harness.
The DSS stuff is well-made with lots of fans out there; people love their Rangers also, so you can't really go wrong here in your selection.
    Thanks Tom,

I was under the impression that the STA added some stability to the tank, apparently not an issue.

It's definitely tough deciding, both the plate and the ranger are great. A huge step up from the jacket I am using now.

Its more of a system. I dove with a Transplate/Venture wing that had some tank rock to it, my DSS is far more solid due to the cam strap tension pads where the tank bands go through the slots in the plate, and the little tank stablizer on the wing strap. Plus it's still easy to take the wing off the plate to rinse it without unthreading the tank bands. You really have to see it to understand how it works. I'll try to post pics in my gallery tomorrow or Friday.

Maybe a better question would be if he plans to buy some of the weight plates.

Then again it is none of my business.

Personally, I want a Kydex plate for travel with no weights and a stainless plate with some weights for local (Monterey Bay) diving. But that's just me, and nobody asked.

Mine is solid as a rock. I love it.

I did my "pre-packing" for my trip to Bonaire last night. My bag weighs 53.5 lbs. Fortunately the limit for all the carriers I will be using will be 70 lbs, but there are times and places (like PNG) where the limit is 50 lbs. In that case 3.4 lbs could be very significant.

Of course if I have either plate right now, my bag would probably be significantly lighter, but that is a different issue.

    Two thoughts:

    1) Try putting a 3.4 lb ankle weight around the neck of your tank, and see if it makes a difference. It's actually more like 4 lbs, and the kydex plate is not 1.6 lbs negative, the plastic portion is close to neutral.

    2) Weight restrictions for travel, can make that last 3. whatever very expensive.

BTW Don, when can I expect my goods?

    Thanks,

    You're kidding...right?

Don...you've had Tobin's plate for almost two months?

At this point, I think I'd feel silly sending anything but a check!

Counting last weekend it has been exactly 10 days since my return from Cozumel. Please accept my most humble apology for not having it in route to you before now.

Although I have yet to get your UPS number as you promised. Would you mind forwarding that too me?

    Tobin,

Didn't realize that you were offering free financing. Guess I'd rather owe it to you than cheat you out of it. I will be diving my rig again this weekend; still have the Pro-fit harness in tact but still planning some changes.
