..Now I am starting to wonder if these are supposed to be on the belt near the backplate, securing the shoulder straps at a fixed length?
That is how they are typically used (to "fix" the length of the shoulder straps). They are positioned on the back side of the lower slots of the plate (if that makes sense).
But others intentionally do it the way you have yours rigged, so in the end it is whatever works best for your diving.
I cross the shoulder straps on my rig, I dont know if it will help you but I like how it feels.
As I was setting my rig up for the first time I was wondering if that would work since the straps seem to naturally seem to want to do so. Does anyone else do this? Anyone recommend against it?
Crossing the straps makes them ride closer to your neck, so it's helpful for people with narrow shoulders. It also makes the plate ride a little lower on your back, which can be a problem with certain sets of doubles.
I cross mine because I'm very small, and if I don't, the webbing chews into the insides of my arms.
The Deep Sea Supply ProFit harness comes already rigged with the straps crossed.
Based on the angle of the slots at the top of the backplate, the web lays more natural if the straps are crossed. So when I rigged my OxyCheq SS Travel Plate that's what I did. It works fine.
