Off topic but just a quick question to Inon lens users. If I had to choose just one uw lens for most general purpose uses would I get the UWL-100 as a starter for use with a Canon housing (for an old S30)?
Is it possible to attach a filter in front of the lens with Canon's housings? I don't believe there is any threading on the housing, but perhaps one could be attached through the Inon bayonet mount, or placed within the housing? Or could this be hacked? Any experience with this?
I don't know about attaching filters. Yuzo could probably answer that for you.
As for the lens...ahhh, that is the question! What do you like to shoot?
Me, I love to shoot the teeniest things I can find so for me two 165 macros were my first choice.
Due to a turn of events, I actually got the WAL first and I like it. I have really used it twice - on the two trips I have done reports about! I've used it a few other times, too, but not as extensively as I probably should.
Many people say get the WA before any other lens, but really it depends on what you like to photograph. I use my macros far more than the WAL at the moment. I love my macros.
If you are thinking of the WAL at all do not skimp on the strobe, you'll need the coverage and the power and manual controls IMHO.
But as DesertEagle pointed out, the 28mm equivalent wide angle end of the S70's zoom probably vignettes so much with a wide angle converter that Inon isn't even making a lens adapter for it.
This is just dumb. Just because it's already wide, that's no reason to not use a wide adaptor. To prevent vignetting, just don't zoom out so much. The end result will be the same.
On the other hand, if you're looking for a camera with a wide lens, the S70 isn't a bad choice. It's perfectly usable above-water, too, where some people want a wide lens. Whether 28mm is wide enough under water is a personal choice.
If I need to choose from canon I'd go for g6. It has far better optics than a-series. I have a70 at the moment and since I don't have an external strobe I get very long shooting times (whatever the correct term is ). Unfortunately only Ikelite makes housings for that series and as they are great and bulletproof they do cost a bit.

Canon makes housings for I think all of their A-series cameras.
I have an A75 and paid about $160 for Canon's housing.
Yup you can get housings for all the small canons but if you like to really get into uw photography canon doesn't help as the best compact series (g) is not an underwater camera if it was for canon to decide.

Of course the g6 is nicer than the a70. the g6 costs three times as much. with housings you are talking roughtly $400 vs. $1200. Why not go with a DSLR for only another factor of three in cost?
Another good choise is the Olympus 5050 and later models. They are not ulike the Canon G-series
For value priced UW setup the A95 is hard to beat but of course for more money you can do better
