Instrument attached to Reaper Sign, Peacock 1 ?

Curious about the instrument looking thing-a-ma-bob tied to the back of the entrance warning sign at Peacock 1. What is it?
    Alien transponder?? Big brother??
    It looks mighty cool.

I believe it's a water quality sampling device.

It is a hydrolab for testing different water quality measures. There is one at Madison,as well as smaller sensors placed in different areas of the cave at Peacock. One thing that is hoped to be learned is what occurs with dissolved oxygen during a flooding event. River water is rich in dissolved oxygen, but after awhile the DO count gives evidence of dropping. This type of instrumentation will help to answer questions, and collects sample data on a regular interval.

My buddy and I put one there back in January for the University of Florida after anoter group broght it out for them to down load and replace the battery. It was cool to help them out and to learn what they were doing with the water sampling. They were realy looking to see how many divers realy Pee in there wet suits!

Ah, I figured it was something like that. Cool stuff. Thanks for the replies and good luck with the research.

The data has been very valuable to help with our biota inventories we have been doing for 6 years. We have a good understanding of population trends in Peacock, and we see a pattern of populations returning to normal levels after a flood in a certain time period, but water quality data is lacking. U of F has been a great partner in sharing data they collect in their research.
