Dan,

what are the responsibilities of being a Board Member? Are there any other ways for a Cave Diver to participate and give back to the cave diving community?

Finally, is there a place to sign up to be a member or an easy way to see if you're paid up?

Doc,

Here is a link to join/renew your membership in the NSS-CDS:

Join or Renew with the NSS-CDS | National Speleological Society Cave Diving Section

The board members are the governing body of the NSS-CDS, and are responsible for developing the programs and training that the CDS does to train cave divers and instructors, protect and promote the ecological and topographical health of cave systems in the United States, encourage safe and responsible overhead environment scuba exploration.

A copy of the Constitution and Bylaws of the NSS CDS is available here:

NSS-CDS Bylaws and Constitution | National Speleological Society Cave Diving Section

If you are unsure of the status of your membership or want to make changes to your membership:

https://secure.caves.org/nssapps/changeinfo.shtml

The board members must be willing to participate actively in the meetings of the board (you can appear remotely) and attend the annual meeting of the CDS. In addition, you should be prepared to help this organization develop its plans (short and long term) to improve the Cave Diving mission of the CDS by safety, innovation, and with enthusiasm.

Great question, and kudos to you for asking! It is admirable to those that want to serve on the board, but they may not want that much obligation,or test the water first. NSS-CDS has many subcommittees that can always use help without a large outlay of time. I chair the conservation committee and always in search of people interested in helping, but there are othere committees that may suit your interest. Also, the North Florida Springs Alliance,Current Problems.org,Florida Springs Institute are organizations that can use help and give back directly or indirectly to the cave diving community. I don't want to hijack this thread,so please PM me if you would like more information.

Finally, is there a place to sign up to be a member or an easy way to see if you're paid up?

Contact Bruce Ryan to see if your paid up,he will be listed on the NSS-CDS web site
