I was thinking about coming down to Costa Rica for a quick trip in early-mid December. Already dived the Guanacaste area years ago. This trip, I'm thinking of spending a few days in Jaco where I know there isn't any diving but there's some just north in Herradura.

How is this area for diving during this time of year? Is it worth doing? Or should I delay this trip until April/May?

I think the only diving in that area is at Isla Tortuga and it is closer to Montezuma and Montezuma is much nicer. There are two places in Costa Rica I tell people to stay away from and Jaco is second on that list, Limon is first. I would head further south to dive Isla Del Cano.

We'll be running trips to Cano island from November the 10th out of Quepos which is about 50 minutes south of Herradurra. I am unsure if the dive operator will be open at that time as he tends to open mid december if I am not mistaken. If you need any info just drop me a line.

Hi Clint,
Herradura Divers is closed during the rainy season between mid of may and end of November to provide only the best dive conditions to our clients.
We will start dive operation in a few days and we have space left for example on Saturday December 8th for 2 local dives.
If you would like to see what you may encounter while diving with us, well have a look here:

What's the chances of seeing mantas during April to May?

What's the chances of seeing mantas during April to May?

Hi Clint,
manta rays and the sharks are our main attraction - beneath our beautiful, steep volcanic rock formations and shoals - and it's our goal to show them to our clients, but marine life is unforeseeable.
I personally saw Manta Rays between 1 of January and end of April but the most sightings are between mid of February and end of March. But even then the manta rays come and go, sometimes we see them on both dives for weeks and then they go away for some days.
I would say that - if you make several dives - the chances to see manta rays in April are about 70% while in march the chances are about 90%.

Chris
