    Cmas/ymca

Hi, I was YMCA Certified, and remember during my classes hearing about how you could get a CMAS card too, how does one go about doing this?

    Thanks.

One does this by sending a copy of one's YMCA C-card to the YMCA SCUBA Program along with the fee. In a week or two one received a CMAS card. The only problem with it is this option ended with the YMCA SCUBA Program at the end of last year. The good news is there's no need for a CMAS card, your Y card will still be accepted everywhere.

I know it doesn't matter in terms of using the card, but I remember hearing the CMAS one was required over in Europe, is that still the case?

    Thanks,

    It's never been the case.

It used to be that the old YMCA program was permitted to issue "equivalency" certifications but since they do not exist that is not available. The only way you can achieve a CMAS qualification is to successfully complete a CMAS course. This is the same as with any other legitimate organization. If you visit our website you can get more information on CMAS training Welcome to CMAS AMERICAS OFFICIAL WEBPAGE

Again your information is not entirely correct. In some places such as Greece and France you must be certified by a CMAS member organization to dive without going through a check out procedure in order to dive without a guide (i.e. Instructor or Three Star Diver (Divemaster)). Of course other agencies do not acknowledge this as they are trying to get you to take their course.
