Hello to all,

I have just got round to tinkering with a Bristol 4S-24 I got as a project recently. It came without filters and I am unsure what it needs. The pipework terminates in 2 parallel pipes one around 6mm and the other 10mm. Im assuming the larger pipe is the main air outlet from the final stage - the smaller pipe comes from 3 small aluminium separator pots all fired by a solenoid.

Would I be right in thinking the smaller pipe is the main moisture drain and I should fit a ball-valve to it (opening every 15minutes?) As this compressor has these separator pots will it need an extra coalescor tower before the main filter?

Any advice gratefully received

A few photos will help if you can post them.
But i THINK the small 6 mm pipe is the main drain from coalescor back to the 3rd small ally block do NOT fit a tap.
The solenoid is open with out power & all air will pass to drain,To make air the power the solenoid to close.
Drop power every 15 to 20 min to operate drains.

Yes you will have to have a coalescor then a one way valve them main filter unit.
Its best to fit a saftey valve to the coalescor also a pressure maintaing valve to main filter out let.

I have taken some photos. The larger pipe comes straight from the final stage. The thinner pipe from the 3 drain-pot combo as pictured. At the base of this assembly is a drain exit also - hence my confusion. I think the drain pots are emptied at 1st power up and then at power off by the solenoid. The small bore pipe I thought needs a tap for manual draining purposes every 15-20 mins?

The solenoid valve was broken in two but i 'repaired' it - would you know if this is replaceable with a stock 3/2 solenoid? a replacement locally from a compressor tec is $180 or a generic is $30!

Hi mark that is better photos show a lot.
1 the pipes are 3/8 &1/4 od not 6&10 mm
2 3/8 pipe is main out put to filter system
3 1/4 pipe is air back from coalescor drain to dump system
4 solenoide is not a std of shelf part
5 depending on solenoide type fitted it can be either way power on or off.
normal way for mains AC power unit is [power on to close solenoide] ie system working.
if petrol drive or hyd drive most times its the other way round DC.
its not a big deal either way on the one you have.

Housing on left with solenoide fitted in the top ally section is a small 4mm pipe from the first stage.at the bottom is a 1/4 pipe from the second stage seperator also a small pipe at 2nd stage pressure to top of center housing, at bottom a 1/4 pipe from third stage seperator & a small 4mm pipe to top of right housing,at bottom is main hp feed from water drain coalescor.
All 3 housings are held on to manifold with 1/8 bsp banjo bolts and then a big drain pipe.
The housings are fitted with pistons big at the top small at bottom
left hand piston is BLACK other 2 are WHITE.

Best place i have found for replacment solenoide is a parker agent
you have to get all the bits them build it up.
2- screws 621FIL
1- O Ring 628FIL
1-O ring 631FIL
1- VOE-Manual over ride 632FIL [State voltage required] You call it a solenoide
1-Knurled nut 651 FIL
1-Washer 652 FIL

I have an old Bristol Pneumatics Tools Ltd Air Compressor made for Midland Diving Equipment Ltd in England. It's called a M.D.E. Bristol High Pressure Charging Set for dive air. It's a BM4S7 MKI.
Is this the same company as the one described in this forum?

My compressor pressure rating is 3500 psi but only kicks out 1500psi. I assume that the 4th stage rings or piston are worn as it was purchased in July 1973.
Any spares for these still available or can similar parts be sourced?
Particularly 4th stage piston rings. I have the handbook with component dimensions and tolerances.
