Am after some advice/comments on whether to go for a wrist mounted compass and therefore a 2 pod console (SPG and depth), or get a larger console with all 3.
I have a wrist computer, and wonder if I might find the large 3 pod consoles a bit chunky? I know there are 2 pod ones available with the compass on the back but they also seem chunky.
Is there a preference from a DIR or tech diving point of view?
Since you already have a wrist mounted computer, why not go for a wrist mounted compass too. Instead of the console, a bare SPG on a relatively short hose would finish the set-up. Although DIR isn't big on computers, this is how they arrange the gear. The Suunto SK-7 compass in the Deep Sea Supply mount is very popular and works well.

Personally I really like my 3 pod (inline) console. All in a glance. I don't need to don & doff it and it's always where. Works great for my style of diving. I really like the way the console become a 3D lubber line for the compass.
I do not like the 2X1 consoles such as the Sherwood. Not all at a glance and rotating will wear the spool O rings.
In your case you have wrist experience so turn to that. Do you like having it there?
Consider the posture you will hold when doing serious navigation with a compass on the other wrist.
DIR I believe eschews computers and consoles. So that's that.
I wear a wrist computer, a depth/spg/compass in an old USD "Piviot console" and put my wrist compass on to one of the d-rings on my bc. I take it off if I need to but for just general glances I can still see it.
I started doing this while teaching so I could show my students all the options they might encounter.
I normally use the console compass unless I am long distance nav diving then I hold my wrist mount in both hands when I wish I used a compass board.
I would never consider those huge three instrument consoles. I got one, spg and depth on the front and a compass on the rear. It was GIVEN to me because people know I collect dive junk. It is fully functional and it is HEAVY and CUMBERSOME and fully resists any means of securing it reasonably such that it will not plow along behind me. My wife thought she might like it but it was so heavy she swam sideways--lol. The even larger and heavier three in a row are completely untamable and nearly require a winch to haul up.
I do occasionaly use a small--light weight--old---ScubaPro modular mini console from the 70s. It holds a Tekna depth and USD spg and is small and compact. Mounted on a short hose it tucks in and clips nicely on the left waist D ring.
The trend now is to wrist mounted instruments and computers. Of course some people want back up--it would be really nice if somebody would make a triple set of mini instruments---almost to small but big enough to serve in an emergency (computer zonks) but so small that a triple console would be only a few inches long, maybe one inch dial faces. N
I have a Suunto 2x1 console. It's fairly light and about as compact as it can be for 3 full size pucks, and enough attachment points to give lots of options. I mostly look at the computer on my wrist, and the one in the console is a backup. And the compass on the back of the console is fine for me because I don't need it that often. I don't really want to put 2 things on my wrist and I'd probably wind up leaving it most of the time.
If I was using the compass a lot I'd think more about where I had it, but I might even do one on a slate then. So think about how much you use the compass and how you prefer using it.
