Anyone know of a small thermometer for air and water readings I can add to my regular dive kit? I'm thinking to spend not more than, say, $10 US. If there's thermoclimes I might check it often, but on a warm water travel trip, maybe just every other day. I'd prefer digital, but dial is fine too. Perhaps small enough to fasten to the computer's watch band? Or the back of a gauge? Thanks.

campmore and other camping companies such as REI have a little small thermometer that is typically in clear plastic and attaches to a key ring or jacket zipper. It'd be easy to attach to a BCD, etc.

check it out here.

I would think that the glass holding the mercury on it would be pretty strong, but I'd put it in a ziplock bag at least for the first dive so that if it breaks open you won't run the risk of leaking mercury in the water you're diving in.

This whistle apparantly has one on it.

Wal-mart also sells a small thermo in its caming section. Not digital but only a couple of bucks.

I second mike's thoughts on bagging it for the first dive or two tosecure the mercury - just in case, but we all know that Wal-Mart don't sell no junk. :p

That's great - thanks guys. Guess I'll take your suggestion about bagging it for the first dive or so. No sense taking the chance of swimming through a bit of mercury (or feeding it to the fishes).

Trident Sels them specifically made fior diving. They go for about $10 in the local dive shop.
Fits on a watch band or you can zip tie it to a hose.

or just google for "trident thermometer"

Thanks Chris - I think I'd like to first check out a camping store first to see what's available. If I don't see anything better I'll pm you and hope the offer is still there. I should have thought of Trident - they seem to make every little gadget you'd want.

The little camping thermometers with the red fluid inside them are alcohol, not mercury.

The only mercury thermometers you can still obtain nowadays are fever thermometers (not even sure about that) and chemical lab thermometers.

I have heard of people using instant read meat thermometers. You'll find them in the kitchen section of your wally world for 2 or 3 bucks. They usualy come with a sheath that will clip to your bc.
