Several years ago, John Thompson was working at Walter Reed hospital teaching swimming, realized that the injured service members coming for rehabilitation would benefit from the sport of SCUBA Diving. Through his efforts and those of others, “SUDS” or Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba became a reality. Today, more than 200 veterans and active service members who were severely injured in Iraq and Afghanistan have been certified and have continued their education in SCUBA. This non-profit organization, located at WRNMMC at Bethesda has been able to continue it’s rehabilitation efforts through grants, fundraisers, and donations from people who believe this program is well-deserving to support and give back to the heroes who gave to them.

This month, at Academy of Scuba in Phoenix, Az, has been dedicated to raising money for SUDS and one of the efforts is very exciting that all can participate in. The Academy has been fortunate to have an actual plate retrieved by Shadow Diver’s John Chatterton donated by him and his wife Carla, to help raise money for this important charity within the Dive Community. A raffle has been set up and tickets are only $5 each to not only buy a chance to win this beautiful artifact, but to also support SUDS efforts in continuing this important program. The plate comes with a certificate of authenticity, and a piece of history that very few are fortunate to obtain. Tickets may be ordered on line and more information about the fundraising efforts by the academy of Scuba can be found at http://www.academyofscuba.org/januar...le-signup.html
Information can also be found at www.SUDSdiving.org for other opportunities to donate to SUDS and more about the work this organization has done. Hurry, deadline for raffle is January 29th!!
A Very Special Thank You to the Chattertons for making this possible.
