Divers Alert Network® (DAN®) is expanding its continuing education offerings, including new CME opportunities, through two new programs set to debut at upcoming dive shows.
The first, launching at Boston Sea Rovers, is an all-day workshop titled “Prevention, Recognition and Field Treatment of Decompression Sickness (DCS) for the Recreational Diver.” The day will be presented in two parts; the morning session is an interactive DCS workshop that enables discussion with DAN staff on this multifaceted topic. The afternoon program provides the opportunity to become certified in two newly revised DAN Education courses
“The workshop is an example of DAN’s commitment to finding new ways to increase the educational opportunities we offer the diving and medical communities,” said Nicholas Bird, M.D., CEO and chief medical officer of DAN. “We want to ensure divers, professionals and medical personnel have the chance to gain a greater understanding of diving issues and how to prevent or deal with them.”
The second program, offered at Beneath the Sea, follows a similar format but examines the issue of dive accident management. The symposium is geared toward all those wishing to learn more about dive accident management and has been approved for a maximum of 3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits(s)TM. The morning lectures are followed by an afternoon session during which certifications can be earned in emergency oxygen administration and neurological assessment.
“These programs were developed in response to feedback and requests we’ve received from divers and medical professionals about what they want to know,” said Dan Orr, president of DAN. “We hear from divers on the road, on the DAN Emergency Hotline or any way a diver interacts with DAN, and we want divers to know we’re listening. We’ll be able to take what we learn from the in-person debuts and adapt the new programs into opportunities in which all divers can participate and benefit.”
These new programs join an impressive array of learning opportunities already available to divers, including online seminars, real-time webinars, week-long CME courses, and the popular Diving Medical Technician (DMT) and DMT continuing education courses. The newly revised suite of DAN Education courses is scheduled to be released this spring.
