I know the regulars see hotel questions constantly, so I'll try to be as specific as possible. As posted yesterday, I have a week available for a last minute trip to Cozumel. I'm flying out of Denver tomorrow morning at 6 am, returning on the 1st. I have no diving experience, so I'm planning on starting my OWC on Saturday.
I'm planning (but not yet committed) to doing my OWC with BlueXT. They can start my class on Saturday with a private instructor (since they don't have other students) for $425. I'd be interested in hearing any comments on that choice.
I'm early 30s, traveling alone, interested in meeting other people. I've traveled in hostels quite a bit and like the vibe, but I'm older now and not as poor, although I'm still frugal. My inclination is to look for a $30/night room, but that may be my time in Panama/Guatemala talking and not be realistic for Cozumel. Does anyone have experience with the Hostelito hostel (Avenida 10 and Calle 2)? BlueXT recommended Suites Bahia, and the reviews on the board seem fairly positive, but I'm wondering if the extra money is worth it, and concerned about feeling isolated there. Any suggestions that are near to BlueXT (Avenida 5 & Calle 5) and sound appropriate for me?
HockeyPlayer,
I can't speak to the hostel you mention, but you'll find great enthusiasm for BlueXTSea on the board.
Specifically, this past December, my 2 sons were very well served by Blanca, on Christi's staff. But I can't imagine Christi having anything other than excellent instructors.
Back to where to stay, I've gone on the cheap as a solo and had a blast staying at the Barracuda. Very convenient to the grocery store, a rather short walk the other direction to BXTSea shop & town and IMO a great vibe.
I liked it because it was waterfront with a pier BXTSea and others will pick up, has a pool bar and kitchen and is steps away from Rock n' Java for breakfast or a post-dive shake.
Have a great time!
Craig-
The week of Memorial Day is a popular travel week in Cozumel. It may come down to where you can get a room on such short notice at a lower priced hotel. Affordable and social options would be Baracudda and Caribe Blu. During the course with none of the classroom or pool work done in advance, you may not find too much time for socializing...
Jidan at travelnotes (www.travelnotes.cc) has some great rates at affordable places. I've been able to get last-minute rooms through him... but my "last minute" is usually a week or two in advance.
I just confirmed with BlueXT, I start class Saturday morning. I still haven't decided on a hotel. I have most of the day Friday available, so I may just look around once I arrive. I'll continue watching here for suggestions, thanks to all who has responded so far.
You can get in the Villa Blanca for $40/night. e-mail them for a quote.
Standard room? I'd pay the $20-30 more for their Superior rooms. WELL worth the price difference. Depending on the time of year, I usually get the "superior oceanview" for $60-72. Villablanca is, IMO, a good value and great location.
If you stay at Villablanca, beware that you will be charged (well, your dive op will be charged) if you use the Dive Paradise pier across the street for pick-up/drop-off.
If you have not booked a room by the time your their tomorrow, you could go to Tony Romes resturant and Tony will have some idease for you on where to stay. His resturant is located a few blocks from the main square in town either next to or across the street from Black Sharks dive shop, if your asking around on how to get their ask where the Black Shark is and then you'll find it.
You can't go wrong with Blue XT and with an agreesive schedule with your instructor you may even get in a couple of post cert dives.
It may have been mentioned aleady but gearwise I would at least get a mask that fits you before you leave.
PM me if you want more details I'll give you my cell# note on the board that you PM'd me and I will check my mail
