February Trip Report Solved Problem With Ear and a Reptilian Friend
February 2nd Trip Report Solved Problem With Ear and a Reptilian Friend
I returned from a week of diving at the Occidental Grand in Cozumel on Feb. 2nd. We had great weather. In fact, I can't remember if it rained at all. A few waves, but mostly calm and blue (I have been diving in Cozumel every year since 1994).
I went to see an eye, ear, and throat specialist because I was having a problem with my right ear for the last couple of years. In fact, I only had three dives in 2006. The doctor gave me some Nasonex, Anefrin and Sudafed and I was back in the SCUBA business! I began diving after I retired in 1993. In June I will be 72.
The current was reversed (north to south) for most of the dives and pretty swift. In fact, it started to reverse itself again (south to north) at the end of one morning shllow dive. That was a weird experience! That afternoon it had reversed, but the next morning it was back to its North/South mode.
Another highlight was making “friends” with a small 2-foot turtle who “wanted to” swim to my left no more than 2 feet away from me.
The reef was to my left. Periodically the turtle snacked on the reef, and after it was through it immediately went back to me (none of other divers in our group)! This continued for about a half hour. When we got to the surface and boarded the boat, there he/she was waiting… maybe to say “good-bye”?!
I have logged 135 dives and hope to do 200 before I retire (at 80?).
Way to go Brother! I sure hope I'm diving at 72. God Bless You on your quest for 200.

Well I'm not quite that old but then again I'm not all that much younger than you either. I have somewhere around 140 dives in Cozumel alone & my next trip will put me just over the 200 mark or even a bit higher if the weather co-operates or my wife stays at home. Had a minnow do what your turtle did, but would much prefer the turtle being my buddy since they are much more of a memory we want to remember. I had one a few trips ago that not only wasn't leaving it's food source while we photographed it but I thought it expected us to bring back prints before it would move on, but you have that beat hands down. I have no idea of how many more years my doctor will think it's safe for me to dive but that is on my mind each time I plan a trip.

Am I correct in assuming that your " ear problem " was difficulty in equalizing and thus an inability to descend to depth? I ask because I have a friend who is new to diving and she is having the same problem. I thought she might take this info. to her doctor and see if it will help. Love the turtle story.

Another turtle story:
A few years ago when my wife had just got her underwater housing for her camera, we were diving one of the "flat" reefs and we came upon this juvenile turtle sitting on the bottom. Camera to mask my wife went up to it, and just when she got close enough, it took off and went about 10 feet and stopped and sat there looking back at her. She swam over to it, raised the camera, and it took off again, went 10 feet and stopped and waited again. I swear it was grinning at her. This scenario repeated about 10 times. I nearly drowned, laughing through my regulator.
Good to hear your back in business and that you had a great trip!
One awesome turtle memory ya got their!
Did you use Dive Palancar? Jorge (George of the Jungle is my favoite DM)
Yes my problem had to do with pressure equalization! I also took Sudafed and Anefrin spray. I ended up taking Nasonex and Sudafed each day, but Anefrin every other day.

I swear those turtles are like dogs sometimes. They are very attuned to people, like dolphins. The reef sounds like either tormentos or Dalilah.
I pray that we'll still be healthy enough to continue diving into our 70's and 80's too. You are a role model for finding out how to REALLY LIVE YOUR LIFE!!! Thanks for your inspiration. Glad you solved your ear problem and had a great trip. Continued safe and fun diving to you!!!
