El Cantil was great. I really loved the location. We walked to town every evening for dinner. The room was clean, new and really perfect. They had an iron/ironing board, fully stocked kitchen, hair dryer, and there was laundry available down the hall (you needed to get tokens from Claudia, the manager). We didn't use the spa on the terrace because it was too windy the first day, and then, the spa would not heat up again after we had to take the cover off because of the wind. But, it was big, clean and would have been nice.
The diving was good. I highly recommend Aldora. The divemaster, David, was really good. He led the dive well, but wasn't in your face. He had to deal with one diver who kept running low on air really early in the dives. He handled it well, allowing the rest of the group to complete the dives. It was great to be picked up at our pier and have them worry about our gear. We did Palancar Caves and Yucab the first day, which were OK, then Santa Rosa Wall (my favorite wall) and Paso del Cedral (saw 7 huge turtles; two big green morays, a drum and a giant puffer) the second day. We had to move our diving from Thursday/Friday to Friday/Saturday because the day we got there was extremely windy and we didn't feel like fighting a bouncing swim platform to get on the boat. There were only 6 divers on our boat. Very nice.
We rented a car and drove around the south route to Punta Murano on the other side for lunch on the day we had to skip diving, then sat at Paradise Beach the rest of the day. Paradise Beach was peaceful, but had lots of fun activities and was very clean and nice. We ate at Guido's twice for dinner (that is my favorite place), Prima (My husband had a really bad steak. I had veal scallopini, which was really good. I like Prima a lot), and La Cocay. I have to say that I really did not like La Cocay's new space. The atmosphere was nothing like the old place, and the food was just mediocre. I didn't think it was worth the long walk over there. I would like to try Manati and La Veranda next time if I'm going to walk that far.
It was a very relaxing trip. I'd definitely stay at El Cantil again and would absolutely dive with Aldora!
Yea, El Cantil is probably the nicest place I've ever stayed in Cozumel. We usually go with a group of 8 and rent a 4 BR condo. With that many people it's only like $40/night per person. Pretty hard to beat.
Like you said, the location is awesome. I don't like being any further from town so El Cantil is perfect. Got to be able to walk to Prima, La Veranda and Paroquia....
Guidos is on the main road along the water (Ave Rafael Melgar) about 5 blocks north of the square. La Cocay is on 8 norte between 10th and 13th. Manati is right across the street from La Cocay. La Veranda is a couple of blocks south of there and 1/2 block west (toward) the water. Prime is on the street that borders the south edge of the square about 1 block in from rafael melgar.
Hope that helps.
I booked El Cantil over e-mail off of their main web site.
