Hey DandyDon,

If you can get by, please do stop over and see us at Scuba Club for a happy hour margarita. I'll have email access the whole time I'm there. We'd love to meet you in person. Of course that goes for anyone else who happens to be in Cozumel from Aug 9th through the 18th. We've got a whole bunch of repeat offenders as well as a lot of new folks coming and I know this is going to be a really fun trip.

TVM - love to, but we'll only be in town from the 2nd to 5th, then on to the mainland/PDC, then on to Holbox. We leave Cancun on the 10th. Hope y'all have a wonderful trip with borin weather.

DandyDon, if you're at the Carib Blu Aug. 2 to 5, we'll probably run into you--as I'm certain we will on Holbox.

Before Katrina most people ignored evacuation orders and those that stayed to "ride it out" always had a good laugh at the ones who packed up and scurried away, except occasionally when they paid a heavy price for staying.

Accurate and current info. is critical when deciding whether to stay or go. I live in Clear Lake near NASA. When Rita was approaching the Texas Coast, I definitely took it seriously but I was APPALLED by the reaction of our local governing officials here in Houston. Our " Elmer Fudd " look-a-like mayor, Bill White, used this storm as a political opportunity and created a PANIC the likes of which I have never seen in Texas. This panic killed over 100 people on the roads as people made a maddening dash to get out of town. People left as early as 5 days before the hurricane hit, in Cameron , La.on friday. By Wed. night I finally got accurate info. from watching MSNBC weather and following Crown Weather Services. It was clear that the storms eye would miss Houston by a safe margin yet the local weather stations and Fudds office were still scaring the hell out of people. A friend of mine who was heading out HWY 290 called to tell me about the many dead animals he was seeing on the side of the road, dogs and cats. When you cant go much faster than 15 mph. in your car for 12 hours and it is 95 degrees outside, the AC is useless. Many many animals died.

We stayed and all we got was 45 mph. winds at peak and maybe a half inch of rain. Mayor White should have been held accountable for his actions that caused so much pain and death in Houston.

A lot of changes were made as the result of that evacuation fiasco, at the state level as well as the city/county level. Of course it was an overreaction coming on the heels of Katrina. But you can't pin it all on the mayor (the name calling and references to physical appearance reveals an inherent bias) for relaying the recommendations of the national weather services. It was Galveston county officials who called for mandatory evacuations in staged zones, Houston called for voluntary evacuations based on various zones.

And officials were probably stunned that the population actually heeded warnings for once. The usual problem is convincing people to take them seriously. The evacuation was called for certain zones (mostly south of 610 South) based on flood potential but tens of thousands of people outside the zones paniced and fled, too. Nor did it help that people were trying to save all their vehicles along with campers and boats.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, this is a great site to bookmark: Tropical Weather : Weather Underground

Just type in IAH or Houston, TX in the box at the top and click...
