Any body into geo caching? I understand there are about a dozen sites in Cozumel. I've never done it before, but since we are always looking for something to do on the off gas day, I thought it might be something to look into.
If you do geo caching, what's your take on it? Ever done it on Cozumel?
I understand there is a whole sub-niche of scuba geo caching. Does Cozumel have any underwater sites? Anybody thought about creating some?
I've been to several of the caches here on the island. There are some interesting things to be seen... there's a cache near the island's largest tree, for example, and a "virtual cache" at San Gervasio. Lots of what I consider "easy pickings" at a few local bars. And then there are the "hard to find" ones that have you searching either in the jungle or rocky beach.
I'd say if you're interested, here is as good a place to get going as any, and it IS a good way to get to see much of the island.
As far as I know there are no u/w caches here, but that may have changed since I checked the site! I assume you've looked at it, but just in case, check out Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site

The human brain now holds the key to our future. We have to recall the image of the planet from outer space: a single entity in which air, water, and continents are interconnected. That is our home.

I did an UW Geo cache at Blue Hole, NM. As you can not really get coordinates UW the way it worked was you got directions to an UW site in BH. Went UW and got further directions to a land based cache nearby. Kinda different but fun.
I can not comment on what Coz geo caching is like (likely similar to the states?), but it would be fun do or add a new cache. There are 22 caches in Quintana Roo. You can look on the site and download the caches to your GPS. I have no idea if most are in town or even on the island. All the sites appear active and all had activity in 2012 some as recent as yesterday.
Check it out and let us know! I'll have to remember my GPS next time!
My wife and I are avid geocachers and have done a couple of scuba caches so far. We recently went to Bermuda, hoping to do at least some (well, at least one) of the scuba caches they have there, but it was so out of season that we didn't get a chance. We're also planning on placing on of our own in our local scuba park close to home.
Cozumel doesn't seem to have any scuba caches. The problem with placing one there (scuba or not) is maintenance: Vacation caches aren't allowed, so you need a local guardian to take care of it in case something pops up. At least that's the rule on geocaching.com - other listing sites are more liberal in this regard. But on those, your cache wouldn't get as much exposure.
We have some vague plans of hitting Cozumel in the near future and will definitely get those (land) caches when we do!
Only if the cache was buried in the sand next to my lounge chair and palapa! Even then it would have to be partly exposed so I didn't have to dig for it very hard.
Oh under a bar stool at Wet Wendy's would - I would hunt that down for sure!
We found a couple of the real caches - not the "ask the bartender" caches. Found one on the highway headed south near the lighthouse- back in the chit palm jungle as well as at the beach bar on the east side. Also in front of the residencias reef condos. Pretty fun- something to do after your dives! Take bug spray and I mean it - especially if you go to San Gervaisio.
