Me?! I don't even know what Google Voice is? Maybe you meant some other DD...?

I have used Skype to call home as well as changed my Verizon cell phone plan and used it. There are pros, cons, and pitfalls to both.
You can test the tanks you breathe or - dive on hope.

Great news for vacation divers who cannot talk themselves into buying a personal CO tank tester!

Don, I didnt know if you used google voice, but I knew you used something and would have good input!! thanks.
It sounds ok on the web, but I would like to know the good and bad about it, I use it here in the US. Just not sure how it works internationally.
I would use skype, but the hotel we stay at usually has very spotty internet, and it drops signal all the time.

You might be confusing me, but google voice is just a phone number issued by google with a whole lot of internet features, like controlling the numbers features via the internet, like where you want it to forward to, having it email you a text message etc..

however, either I'm confused or I'm not sure how it would work in Mexico any differently then any other phone number. The only thing I can think is somebody could call it and you could get their voice mail message via your email, but other than that, what are you trying to do with it?

That's not all Google Voice is. You can also use it to call out from a computer just like Skype, either to another Google account, or to a physical phone. Outbound calling to phone numbers is Canada and the US is free until at least the end of 2012.

You're not completely confused. If you're running Google Voice on a smart phone, and the phone has a WiFi connection to the Internet, you can make and receive calls from your regular Google Voice-assigned phone number, regardless of where you actually are. Main issue is the quality of the WiFi and Internet connection.

If you end up doing well (or not) with calling out of Mexico on GoogleVoice, I hope you'll post back!

Interesting, I can see the benefits then if you're able to make a normal phone call on a wireless internet connection. I have a few google phone numbers that I use, mostly I use them as an additional free phone line for tracking advertising, we use a different google voice phone number on different ads we run and then we can easily track the effectiveness of different advertising. I also use one for a phone line for our tenants to call in, I let it email me a copy of their voice mail.

Sounds like there could be even more benefits that I'm not aware of.

Yes, GV works fine from MX. Like all other VOIP services, you need a decent IP connection. I used the Starbucks router near the cruise ship terminal. Worked great there. You can also use Skype, Vonage or Firetalk on iOS. I think that Firetalk is free from MX. Check it out.
